Texas Tech's 2016 football season will begin in exactly five days with a Sept. 3 kickoff against Stephen F. Austin.

Today, we continue our Countdown to Kickoff series with a notable way the number five relates to Red Raider football.

5: Pat Mahomes wears No. 5 for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech quarterback Pat Mahomes put up staggering numbers as a sophomore. The Whitehouse, Texas product led the FBS in total offensive yards per game and became just the third player in Big 12 history to account for 5,000 total yards in a single season.

Not bad for a first-year starter.

Mahomes accounted for 46 total touchdowns in 2015, the fifth-best season total in program history; B.J. Symons, Graham Harrell (twice) and Kliff Kingsbury are the only Red Raiders to have ever topped that single-season mark. He stands a very good chance of finishing the 2016 season behind just Harrell and Kingsbury on the program's career lists for passing yards, attempts, touchdowns and completions.

Tomorrow: 4 - We look at Texas Tech's history with the Heisman Trophy.
