Texas Tech's 2016 football season will begin in exactly six days with a Sept. 3 kickoff against Stephen F. Austin.

Today, we continue our Countdown to Kickoff series with a notable way the number six relates to Red Raider football.

6: Graham Harrell wore No. 6 for the Red Raiders.

The case for Graham Harrell as the greatest signal caller in Texas Tech football history is a simple one. He is the program's winningest starting quarterback (28-11), one of its most decorated players regardless of position and dominates its passing record book. By virtually any metric, Harrell stands alone.

Perhaps more impressive than the hard data is how many signature memories Harrell engineered in his three seasons as a starter. His 28-yard pass to Michael Crabtree to beat No. 1 Texas in 2008 is the most iconic play in the history of Red Raider athletics. That has to be mentioned first, but there were so many others -- Harrell's touchdown pass to Robert Johnson to beat Texas A&M in 2006, the Insight Bowl comeback, the upset over Oklahoma in 2007, the Gator Bowl comeback, the demolition of No. 9 Oklahoma State in 2008, playing with a shattered hand against Baylor in 2008.

Tomorrow: 5 - The most decorated player in Texas Tech football history.
