Texas Tech's 2016 football season will begin in exactly nine days with a Sept. 3 kickoff against Stephen F. Austin.

Today, we continue our Countdown to Kickoff series with a notable way the number nine relates to Red Raider football.

9: DeAndre Washington averaged more than nine yards per carry in his Senior Day performance against Kansas State.

Before DeAndre Washington hit Texas Tech's campus, the top rushing performance in the program's Air Raid era belonged to Taurean Henderson. Back in 2004, Henderson racked up 169 rushing yards in a win at Kansas. That mark stood for a decade, until Washington ran for 186 yards against Iowa State in 2014 and then for 188 against TCU in 2015.

The Missouri City product saved his best for his final game at Jones Stadium.

During the Red Raiders' Senior Day against Kansas State, Washington averaged a staggering 9.2 yards per carry, rushing for 248 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. Not only is that, by far, the best single-game rushing showing of Texas Tech's Air Raid era, but it is also the seventh-best single-game performance in program history.

Tomorrow: 8 - We look at one of Texas Tech's many passing records.
