Texas Tech's 2016 football season will begin in exactly 16 days with a Sept. 3 kickoff against Stephen F. Austin.

Today, we continue our Countdown to Kickoff series with a notable way the number 16 relates to Red Raider football.

Texas Tech has played Texas 64 times since the series began in 1934, with the Longhorns holding a decisive 48-16 head-to-head edge.

The Red Raiders' 48-45 win in Austin last season snapped the program's six-game losing streak to its in-state rival. That was Texas Tech's second-longest drought versus Texas, behind only a seven-game stretch from 1958-66.

The Red Raiders have not won two in a row against the Longhorns since the 1997-98 seasons and have never won three consecutive games in the series.

Kliff Kingsbury's team will get another crack at UT on Nov. 5 in Lubbock.

Tomorrow: 15 - We look at one of the most productive defensive lineman to play at Texas Tech.
