Texas Tech's 2016 football season will begin in exactly 12 days with a Sept. 3 kickoff against Stephen F. Austin.

Today, we continue our Countdown to Kickoff series with a notable way the number 12 relates to Red Raider football.

12: There have been 12 quarterbacks in Texas Tech history to throw for 400 or more yards in a single game.

Texas Tech quarterbacks have combined to throw for 400 yards or more 70 times during the program's history.

Billy Joe Tolliver was the first Red Raider to top the 400-yard mark. He set the program record for single-game passing yards as a freshman, lighting up TCU for 422 in 1985. Three years later, as a senior, Tolliver broke his own record by passing for 486 yards against Oklahoma State.

That record stood until Mike Leach arrived on the South Plains in 2000. Within the span of 15 seasons, Tolliver's 1988 performance against the Pokes went from the top passing game in Texas Tech history to the 36th-best.

In all, beginning with Tolliver, 12 different Red Raider quarterbacks have hit the 400-yard mark: Billy Joe Tolliver, Kliff Kingsbury, B.J. Symons, Sonny Cumbie, Cody Hodges, Graham Harrell, Taylor Potts, Steven Sheffield, Seth Doege, Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb and Patrick Mahomes. Six of those players - Kingsbury, Symons, Cumbie, Hodges, Harrell and Mahomes - have thrown for 500 yards or more in a single game.

Tomorrow: 11 - We look at one of many school records set by Michael Crabtree.
