PREVIOUS COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF ENTRIES: 50 | 49 | 48 | 47

Texas Tech's 2016 football season will begin in exactly 46 days with a Sept. 3 kickoff against Stephen F. Austin.

Today, we continue our Countdown to Kickoff series with a look at a notable way the number 46 relates to Red Raider football.

Texas Tech quarterback Pat Mahomes put up staggering numbers as a sophomore. The Whitehouse, Texas product led the FBS in total offensive yards per game and became just the third player in Big 12 history to account for 5,000 total yards in a single season.

Not bad for a first-year starter.

Mahomes accounted for 46 total touchdowns in 2015, the fifth-best season total in program history; B.J. Symons, Graham Harrell (twice) and Kliff Kingsbury are the only Red Raiders to have ever topped that single-season mark. Indeed, Mahomes was responsible for more touchdowns last season than Billy Joe Tolliver scored in his entire four years on campus (44).

Now what will Mahomes do for an encore?

Tomorrow: 45 - We look back at a record-setting day for the 2003 Texas Tech offense.
