The Texas Tech Red Raiders completed their first two summer camps over the weekend, which hosted tons of recruits from the 2026 and 2027 classes. One recruit who earned an offer after attending the second of the Texas Tech Red Raider summer camp was 2027 San Antonio (TX) Johnson athlete Mikhail McCreary.
RedRaiderSports caught up with him to discuss the camp and picking up his first offer.
What you need to know...
... TTU was the first program to offer him on June 3.
... Per his athletic.net profile, he competes in the 200 meters, 4x100 relay, and 4x200 relay. He and his relay team won the district championship in the 4x200 with a time of 1:29.23, qualifying for the UIL 6A Area 27-28 & 29-30 Track Meet in both events.
The recruiting process: "The recruiting process has been very exciting so far. Last season, it was about solidifying myself as a worthy prospect for coaches to consider, and moving forward, it's about getting better and making the most of every opportunity presented to me."
Texas Tech Camp: "Tech was great! The coaches really took the time to give instruction, and they gave me great tips to add to my arsenal as a defensive back. The opportunity to get with my position coach and get some individual attention also meant a lot.
I got a chance to connect with Coach Yates, the secondary coach, Coach DeRuyter, the defensive coordinator, and then head coach Joey McGuire. They were very cool and down to earth! The overall message was attention to detail and the importance of being focused on the little things."
Receiving his offer from Texas Tech: "When I received my offer from Tech, man, I was really hoping to get an offer from here because I really like this school, as my sister graduated from the nursing program here. So I've been on campus quite a few times and really like it."
Thoughts on the Texas Tech football program: "I really love the coaches and the program there. The attention to detail and the time Coach Yates took to give me instructions and tips as a DB said a lot to me that if I went there, I would definitely get better as I worked towards my dreams."
Other schools in the mix: "Some other schools I have heard from this spring are UTEP and Texas A&M Commerce, which showed interest. Houston and Baylor have invited me to their camp to evaluate me in person."
2023 season and looking ahead to the upcoming season: "Last season went really well, as I played both sides of the ball and had a really good season. My goal for the upcoming season is to do my part to help put my team in a playoff position to make a deep run toward state. Personally, I really look to solidify myself as one of the best defensive backs in the district and the state of Texas. But my team goal comes before my personal goals."
The off-season: "The off-season is going great. I am just training, taking care of my body, and being ready to dominate at each camp, which is my focus! My following camps are at Texas on Thursday and Baylor on Saturday."
