RELATED: Three-star CB commits to Texas Tech | Why his pledge is important
The Texas Tech coaches hosted Cedar Hill outside linebacker target Dimitri Moore for an unofficial visit this weekend. Since offering the standout prospect in mid-May, the Red Raiders have made Moore one of their top targets at the linebacker position.
"I have mostly talked with coach (Zac) Spavital and coach (Emmett) Jones since Texas Tech offered a few months ago," Moore said. "They only have a few offers out to linebackers in my class and it means a lot that they don't just offer everybody. The coaches feel that I can help turn the program around and improve the defense."
Moore made the trip to Lubbock with his mother and enjoyed the experience at Texas Tech.
"It was a great visit," Moore said. "I really liked what they had to say and what they have to offer. There was a lot of love there, great vibes, and I loved it. I spent a lot of time with coach Spavital and coach (David) Gibbs.
"Really all of the coaches were spending time with me, except for the head coach. He was out of town at the Miami Dolphins' practices to see a former player, but we messaged on Twitter and he thanked me for taking the visit."
During the visit, Moore had the opportunity to sit down with Spavital and learn more about how the Red Raiders could use him within the defense.
"Coach Spavital and I discussed the linebackers they have offered," Moore said. "We talked about some of the guys they have coming back and the depth chart overall. I would have to earn it, but there is early playing time available at linebacker.
"The coaches see me playing the hybrid outside linebacker position. Playing some inside backer and outside backer, rushing off the edge."
The standout prospect also had the opportunity to tour the Texas Tech campus and learn more about the university.
"The stadium and the facilities were lit," Moore said. "I liked it a lot and the university is big, it's the No. 2 largest campus in the nation. It was mostly football focused, but I also learned more about some of the traditions they have around the campus.
"I remember when I was younger and used to watch Texas Tech and Oregon. I always liked the colors, red and back, because it's just like Cedar Hill and I wanted to play varsity football for Cedar Hill. I remember telling my brother that I would play for Texas Tech because of the colors too, but that was just me talking as a little kid."
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect holds nearly 20 scholarship offers from programs across the country and started taking unofficial visits to a few programs this summer.
"I just took the visit to Texas Tech and I also took visits to Iowa State, Missouri and Minnesota recently," Moore said. "That is the good part of recruiting, getting to see different places and different programs. I'm probably going to take official visits to out of state programs like Colorado, Vanderbilt, Missouri, Minnesota, and maybe one other school. Mostly the programs further away from home.
"In terms of location, I really don't care. The people that do care about location would be my mother, mostly because she wants to attend my games. Sometimes I prefer leaving, but it changes. I have always kind of wanted to get away. Texas Tech is closer to home, but it isn't too close either."
Moore is all set to graduate early this December, another reason so many coaches are high on the standout prospect.
"I graduate in December and most definitely want to make my decision before then," Moore said. "I'm not too focused on releasing a list of my top schools or anything. I will just start to focus on those programs and keep things to myself. I would like to go into entrepreneurship and business, or even combine that with something to do with theater, acting, and directing."
Ranked a 5.7 three-star prospect, Moore is considered the No. 31 overall outside linebacker prospect in the nation. He also earned District 8-6A All-District First Team Defense honors this past season.
