Johnson commits to Texas Tech on the spot after receiving offer

Texas Tech earned its first commitment toward the 2018 recruiting class on Saturday night, as Giddings wide receiver Treveon Johnson pulled the trigger immediately after receiving an offer from Red Raiders.

The Central Texas standout made it clear as to why he made the decision: the Air Raid offense, the opportunity that the team's passing attack affords wideouts and his relationship with coach Emmett Jones.

"Basically I love the fact that Texas Tech throws the ball. Throwing the ball that much is every receiver's dream," he said. "That's thrilling for me. Every kid's dream when they grow up, no matter the profession, is to go pro. If it gives me a chance to go pro, I love it. I love the intensity of it.

"I love how coach Jones - who is a great coach - I love how hyped he gets, how he's very disciplined, and he wants his players to be in the right position at the right time. I like how hyped he is."

Johnson committed to Texas Tech on the spot after receiving an offer on Saturday night. Now, he's hoping to visit the South Plains sometime this fall.

"I'm expecting to go out there for a visit soon," he said. "I haven't set a date yet, but I will head up there sometimes, and I'm expecting a lot of good things."

The relationship between the Red Raiders and Johnson doesn't go back very far, either. He first flashed his talents to the Texas Tech staff at the program's Duncanville satellite camp in July, and things only grew from there.

"Honestly, I think I did very well at the Duncanville camp," Johnson said. "I showed talent, I showed potential. I think I grabbed the attention of the coaches. So, I think overall I did pretty well. I hadn't even had any contact with any of the coaches at Tech before that, actually. I've been staying in touch with coach Jones ever since then, though."

And while they've only been in contact a few weeks, the Giddings receiver and Jones have bonded quickly.

"I love the game, and I know he loves the game," Johnson said. "He's wise at the receiver position. He knows a lot about it, and I want to know a lot about it. So, for a person like myself with some edge and hype, I want a coach with that same type of mentality that I have. I want them to have the same mindset going into a game."

Johnson is the first commit of the 2018 class for Texas Tech.
