Knight informed Athletic Director Gerald Myers of his immediate resignation on Monday morning and Knight's son, Pat, will coach the Red Raiders for the remainder of the season.
During a career that spanned five decades, Knight recorded 902 wins, more than any other Division I coach in men's basketball history; he passed Dean Smith on the all-time list with his 880th win on January 1, 2007.
Knight is perhaps best known for his nearly 20 year tenure as the head coach of Indiana, where he won 11 Big 10 championships, an NIT Championship and three NCAA Tournament titles.
After sitting out a year following his termination from Indiana, Knight accepted the head coaching position at Texas Tech.
During his tenure in Lubbock, Knight was 138-82, and took the Red Raiders to the NCAA Tournament four of his six years, reaching the Sweet Sixteen in 2005.
