Wallace is 'sold on Texas Tech'

With only one starter returning on the defense line in 2016, Texas Tech is expected to sign eight defensive linemen on National Signing Day, including Dallas Skyline 5.5 three-star defensive tackle Joseph Wallace.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Wallace committed to Texas Tech in August over offers from Washington, Iowa State, Nevada, Colorado State, SMU and several others and plans to sign with the Red Raiders in February along with two of his teammates, RB Da'Leon Ward and DE Clarence Henderson. Former Dallas Skyline Raider Mychaelon Thomas, now at Butler (Kan.) Community College also plans to sign. The three-star, who said he currently stands at 6-foot and weigh 311 pounds, has not been in contact with any other schools for quite some time.

IN HIS WORDS

“All of my coaches tell them I’m all sold on Texas Tech, so I haven’t heard from them. I work out every day. Me and Clarence (Henderson) and (Da’Leon) Ward are coming to Tech. I do track and field with the shotput. I work out with them and I actually started boxing last week."

“At my school, they make all the athletes sign altogether. Then after that, we go to a ceremony for all the kids that are going to sign. So that’s pretty much what I’m doing for signing day. All the news stations come out and interview us and stuff like that.”

With all of the losses on the defensive line for the Red Raiders, Wallace’s size could be used to fill a hole immediately and he could see the field as a freshman.

“They told me there’s a possibility I could if I come down there and work, come down in shape and stuff like that,” Wallace said. “The defense needs help, period, especially the d-line with depth. They haven’t told me for sure but I hope I will.”

OUR REACTION

Wallace is built like a cinder block and has a great motor, two things that the Red Raiders will certainly be excited to add at nose tackle on signing day in several weeks. He's very matter-of-fact about signing with Tech, which is great to hear both if you're a fan or a coach. Now, it's all about the official visit and signing ceremony to finish things off. - Will McKay
