Euless (Texas) Trinity defensive back John Davis recently listed Texas Tech in his top three. After narrowing things down, the next item of business was taking a visit out to Lubbock with teammate, and top 2018 target Cameron Jones, to get a better feel for the Red Raiders.

The visit did not disappoint, and the Red Raiders are in very good shape with Davis following his trip.

“They definitely moved way up to number one following that visit,” Davis said.

While Davis is still working to set up visits to Kansas State and Utah – the other two schools in his top three – Texas Tech set the bar pretty high.

“Number one, I felt comfortable for sure," he said. "They answered all of my questions, they answered my parents’ questions. It was like I was already there. It was like I was in college. I was watching film, I was talking to the coaches, I was in the weight room, everything. It just felt like the place to be. I was blown away, honestly. I felt really comfortable there.”

Davis had a lot of takeaway points from the visit, including the academic support, the look and feel of the campus, the training facility and the football field; however, one aspect of the visit really blew him away.

“What was amazing about the visit was that most schools don’t sit down and watch film with you on the visit,” Davis said. “I was able to sit down with coach (Karl) Scott and coach (David) Gibbs and watch film which is something you don’t see on most college visits.

“We looked at scheme and technique and everything. They showed me the depth chart and things I would be doing at Texas Tech. We looked at game film and everything. We run the same scheme they do at Trinity and that was one of the things they stressed to me about why I should go to Tech. They really feel like I would be comfortable playing in their system. It was great.”

Some other highlights for Davis included watching the team workout in the weight room and his one-on-one with head coach Kliff Kinsgbury.

Davis said Kingsbury stressed how much they wanted him in Lubbock and also talked to him a bit more about academics. Davis said that Kingsbury told him to take his time and make the right decision.

As far as a timetable for the 6-foot-1 cornerback’s decision, he is hoping to have everything wrapped up within the next two weeks. As mentioned, a Kansas State unofficial visit is in the works. Davis has been to K-State recently for a camp but only saw the facilities and wants to get a feel for the whole campus. A Utah unofficial is a longshot, currently, but he hopes to contact the coaches soon about any of his questions.

Texas Tech sits atop the list right now, as his outlook on Lubbock without a doubt changed following the trip.

“People before have told me that Tech was boring or that there wasn’t anything to do there, but when I got there, that wasn’t my experience at all," he said. "It was definitely not boring. I really liked the campus and there is definitely a lot to do. From what I saw, it was great.”
