The Texas Tech coaching staff is on quite the roll with transfer players as of late. Kliff Kingsbury and his defensive staff added former five star linebacker Mike Mitchell - who transferred from Ohio State - before last fall began, and he should be a key backup for the Red Raiders at rush end behind senior Pete Robertson with a chance to be a starter down the road.
This summer the Red Raiders picked up two more pieces for their front seven for 2016 in Michigan transfer and defensive tackle Ondre Pipkens and Notre Dame transfer and defensive end or linebacker Kolin Hill. At the very least, these players will help add much needed quality, talented depth to help Texas Tech's defense move forward and improve.
Texas Tech has actually had some luck in the past with transfer players as well, so let's take a closer look at the best prospects to end up as Red Raiders, both from the FBS level and lower levels of college football.
Top FBS Transfers
5. Defensive tackle Chris Perry
Transferred From: University of Miami
Time In Lubbock: Perry, a Keller, Texas native, went to Miami after high school, but after redshirting in 2007, he decided to head back home to the Lone Star State, becoming a Red Raider. Perry was a key backup his entire career for Tech, starting a handful of games in the process. He finished his career with 24 total tackles, four for a loss, and two sacks.
4. Linebacker V.J. Fehoko
Transferred From: University of Utah
Time In Lubbock: Initially a silent commit to Texas Tech throughout the recruiting process, Fehoko ended up at Utah in the coaching staff shuffle when Tommy Tuberville became head coach before the 2010 season. The Hawaiian LB decided to transfer and finally become a Red Raider for his final season of eligibility in 2014, and he developed into a leader both on and off the field. Fehoko finished his one season in Lubbock with 66 overall tackles, good enough for fifth on the team in the category, with three tackles for a loss.
3.Tight end Bristol Olomua
Transferred From: BYU
Time In Lubbock: The former Cougar made his debut for the Red Raiders in 2004, and when he was healthy, he truly added another dimension of physicality and size to Texas Tech's air raid offensive attack. He missed the rest of the year after the Texas game in 2004, but he managed to pull down five touchdowns on 27 receptions for 259 yards in seven games. In 2005, Olomua scored one touchdown on 28 receptions for 309 yards.
2. Wide receiver Alex Torres
Transferred From: Air Force
Time In Lubbock: As a freshman in 2009, Torres exploded onto the scene to become a freshman All-American where he led the team with 67 receptions, tied for second in TDs with six, and finished second in receiving yards with 806. Torres finished as a top three receiver as both a sophomore and junior on 2010 and 2011 despite a few nagging injuries that held him back. The former transfer finished his career with 16 receiving TDs and 2131 receiving yards on 178 receptions.
Transferred From: Duke University
Time In Lubbock: Charbonnet is likely the best player in the last 15 years to transfer in to Texas Tech. He was one of the vital cogs on the Red Raiders' much-improved 2008 defense. He finished the year with the sixth most tackles on the team with 54 total, was second on the team in interceptions behind Darcel McBath with five. That included the key play of his career where he picked off Colt McCoy, returning it for an 18 yard touchdown that re-electrified Jones AT&T Stadium and put Tech up 29-13 in the third quarter over Texas.
Top Lower Divison Transfers
5. Defensive tackle Bennett Ofor
Transferred From: Midwestern State University
Time In Lubbock:Ofor decided to make the step up in competition prior to the 2013 season, joining the Red Raiders as a reserve in 2013. However, he tore his ACL prior to spring football in 2014 and didn't play last fall for Texas Tech.
4. Wide receiver Tyson Williams
Transferred From: West Texas A&M
Time In Lubbock: Williams decided to transfer to Tech after the 2010 season, where he had been a third team team all-American as a sophomore. Williams was one of the starting slot receivers for the Red Raiders in his lone year of eligibility back in 2012, catching 35 balls for 352 yards and two touchdowns on his senior season as a Red Raider.
3. Punter Taylor Symmank
Transferred From: Southern Arkansas
Time In Lubbock: Symmank has quietly been one of the best punters in recent memory for the Red Raiders, and he's arguably the best in the Big 12 right now. He finished third in punting average last season with 42.6 yards per boot, earning an honor as an All Big-12 honorable mention last season. He's also on the Ray Guy Award watch list heading into his senior season and could earn duties as the field goal kicker in addition to his job as the punter.
2. Wide receiver Jordan Davis
Transferred From: Southwestern Oklahoma State University
Time In Lubbock: A hard worker who earned the respect from his teammates, Davis was a key reserve for the Red Raiders in 2013 - 28 receptions for 243 yards and a TD - and would have been a big piece of Tech's offense in 2014 if not for his career being cut short early last season due to concussions. Now, Davis is a GA for the Red Raiders, continuing his career as a coach on Kliff Kingsbury's staff.
1. Cornerback Khalid Naziruddin
Transferred From: Howard Payne University
Time In Lubbock: Naziruddin is one of the better defensive backs to step on campus and play for Texas Tech over the last 15 years, and he was a beast in the weight room. He came in during the 2004 campaign as a junior, finishing the season with a team high-tying 83 tackles. He was a captain for the Red Raiders in 2005, finishing his final season on the South Plains with 66 total tackles and two interceptions.
