With the calendar turning onto the Fourth of July, we took a look at a few of Texas Tech’s athletes that cause fireworks on their playing field.

After putting together a season where he continuously made headlines for one of the fastest growing Track & Field programs in the nation, Zahifi capped off his stellar season with the individual national championship in the 800 meter.

Zahifi’s championship winning effort of 1:44:46 was not a personal best of his on the season. His best came in mid-April in Gainesville with a time of 1:43:69.

Women’s Track & Field: Ruth Usoro

Usoro is a Tech T&F legend, after her national championship in the triple jump in 2021, she followed it up with a second-place finish in the competition in 2022.

One of the most explosive women on campus and she finishes her Tech career being named “Red Raider of the Year” by the University.

Football: Krishon Merriweather

One of the best defensive players on the football roster, Merriweather heads into his final season of eligibility as one of the best tacklers on the team.

After a solid 2021 campaign, Merriweather will have the opportunity to rejoin the ranks as a Big 12 leader in tackling in 2022.

Football: Tahj Brooks

A no-doubter here, Tahj Brooks is one of the most electric players to watch on the Texas Tech offense.

Despite appearing in just 9 games due to injury, Brooks led the Red Raiders in rushing yards and yards per attempt as a sophomore in 2021. He has looked phenomenal in practice and all signs point to an incredible year for the star running back.

Don't sleep on his receiving ability either... Brooks will be catching more passes out of the backfield in 2022, which should excite Red Raiders fans everywhere.

Basketball: Elijah Fisher

The highly touted incoming freshman is one of the best athletes Texas Tech has had in a while. Fisher is built like an NBA player and is elite at getting to the rim, finishing in traffic, and dunking over opponents. He's practically impossible to stop once he gets a head of steam.

In February, Fisher broke an OSBA record, scoring 74 points in a single game against the New Horizon Academy. Watch out for Elijah Fisher.
