Patrick Mahomes is heading to the NFL, as the junior quarterback announced his NFL decision early Tuesday morning. Mahomes will go down as one of the most prolific QB's in Tech history and produced a highlight-reel that could last for hours. Between the scrambling around, the wild throws, and the arm-flexing, Mahomes was one of the more exciting QB's to watch throughout his 32-game career as a Red Raider.

Below is a timeline of his career, including how he became the QB Kingsbury wanted most out of high school, a heralded multi-sport athlete, and one of the best playmakers in all of college football.

2011- 2014 High School career

2011 - Second team All-State (baseball, pitcher), All-District honorable mention (safety), All-District offensive MVP (basketball)

2012 - After playing safety for two years, Mahomes was switched to quarterback. He amassed 3,839 yards with 46 touchdowns in his first year as a starting quarterback. He was honorable mention All-State and was named All-District MVP.

2012 - All-State honorable mention (baseball, shortstop), All-State third team selection (baseball, pitcher), first team All-District (baseball), District MVP (basketball).

January 11, 2013 - Mahomes receives scholarship offer from Texas Tech, despite playing QB for one season.

April 21, 2013 - Mahomes announces his commitment to the Red Raiders over offers from Houston and Rice.

November 2013 - Mahomes' HS football career comes to a close. He threw for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns with 948 yards rushing and another 15 touchdowns. Was voted AP 4A Player of the Year, All-State offensive MVP, first team All-State quarterback, All-District MVP.

2013 - Honorable mention All-State (baseball, pitcher), first team All-State (baseball, utility), first team All-District (baseball), All-District MVP (basketball).

February 5, 2014 - Mahomes signs with Texas Tech. He was rated as a 5.7 three-star prospect, the No. 12 dual-threat QB, and the No. 49 player in Texas.

2014 - Was voted MaxPreps 2013-2014 National Male Athlete of the Year

2014 - College career

June 7 - Mahomes is drafted in the 37th round (pick 1,120) by the Detroit Tigers.

August - Webb enters 2014 as starter with true freshman Mahomes as backup due to departures of Baker Mayfield and Michael Brewer.

September 25 - Mahomes gets first game-action against Oklahoma State in Stillwater due to injury suffered by Webb. He goes 2 of 5 for 20 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also tacks on seven rushes for 16 yards.

November 1 - Mahomes gets his first career start against Texas as a true freshman. Goes 13 of 21 for 109 yards before suffering a concussion on a read-option keeper.

November 15 - Mahomes gets the nod for his second start against Oklahoma. Goes 27 of 50 for 393 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

November 22 - Mahomes records his first career win as a starting QB against Iowa State in Ames. Completed 23 of 35 passing for 328 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

November 29 - Set multiple records in a wild 48-46 loss to No. 7 Baylor. Mahomes completed 30 of 56 passes for 596 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. Set the record with the most passing yards in a game by a true freshman.

Finished his freshman season with 1,547 passing yards with 16 touchdowns and four INTs in seven games (four starts).


2015 - Sophomore season

February 15 - Mahomes makes baseball debut for the Red Raiders getting a pinch-hit appearance against San Francisco (0-1)

February 21 - Mahomes makes relief pitching debut in the ninth inning against NIU giving up three earned runs and recording two walks. He does not record an out.

March 13 - Mahomes pinch hits for Cory Raley in a game versus San Diego State, going 0-1 at the plate

August - September - Competes with Davis Webb during fall camp for the QB spot

September 5 (pre-game): Red Raider fans learn that Mahomes is starting QB when he trots onto the field against Sam Houston State.

September 5 - Throws for 425 yards and four touchdowns in 59-45 victory over Sam Houston State to kick off 2015 campaign.

September 19 - Notches big road win versus Arkansas, completed 26 of 30 passes for 243 yards with three total touchdowns (two rushing, one passing).

October 10 - Threw for 371 yards in first half against Iowa State (66-31 win).

November 27 - Quarterbacks first Tech win in Austin since 1997. Completed 22 of 39 passes for 372 yards and a touchdown with another 70 yards rushing and a touchdown.

December 29 - Completed 28 of 56 passes for 370 yards with four touchdowns and one interception against #20 LSU in Advocare V100 Texas Bowl. Tech was down 21-20 towards beginning of third quarter, but would go on to lose game 56-27.

Finishes 2015 season with 4,653 pass yards and 36 touchdowns (15 INTs) with another 456 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. Led the country with 393 yards of offense per game. Was youngest QB ever to surpass 5,000 yards of total offense.

Earned Sports Illustrated All-America honorable mention honors following 2015 season.

2016 - Junior season

January 20 - After being a multi-sport athlete for his entire athletic career, Mahomes gives up baseball to focus solely on football. His first ever offseason where solely dedicated to football.

Spring ball - Mahomes makes waves with his dazzling practice videos of no-look passes and deep bombs

June 2016 - Kingsbury and Mahomes make the cover of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. Title of magazine: "Kliff Kingsbury is The Kingmaker" article written by Bruce Feldman.

September 3 - Mahomes makes 2016 debut against Stephen F. Austin throwin for 483 yards on 30 of 43 passing. He recorded six total touchdowns and 57 yards rushing.

September 10 - Mahomes throws for 540 yards in 68-55 loss to Arizona State.

September 29 - Records career long 34-yard rush but goes down with significant shoulder injury following the run. Was injured in the third quarter of the 55-19 conference-opening win.

October 8 - Despite AC joint sprain, Mahomes gets the nod to start over Nic Shimonek against Kansas State. Playing through pain, Mahomes completes 45 of 62 passes for 504 yards and five total touchdowns (three rushing, a career high).

October 22 - Staring down a potential sub-.500 record, Mahomes lays it all on the line at Jones AT&T stadium against top-15 Oklahoma. Mahomes completed 52 of 88 passes for an NCAA-tying 734 yards and five passing touchdowns. The records don't stop there as Mahomes tacks on another 85 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Mahomes' 819 yards of total offense is an NCAA record. Tech lost to Oklahoma 66-59.

November 25 - With season over (4-7 record) Mahomes puts it on Baylor in the final regular season game. Mahomes completed 30 of 46 passes for 586 yards and six touchdowns with no INTs.

December 1 - Mahomes is recipient of Sammy Baugh Trophy given to the nation's top passer.

Mahomes finishes 2016 season with 5,052 yards passing with 41 touchdowns (10 INTs) with another 12 touchdowns rushing. He led the nation in passing yards, total offense, and total touchdowns.

2017

January 3 - Mahomes announces his intention to forego his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft

April 27-April 29 - With the No. X overall pick, the X team selects Patrick Mahomes, quarterback, Texas Tech.
