Texas Tech lands No. 5 for 2018

Despite the 3-4 start to the season, the Texas Tech coaches continue landing new commitments to an already strong 2018 recruiting class. Paschal wide receiver Jaylon Robinson became commitment No. 5 for the Red Raiders in 2018 after last night's game against Oklahoma.

"I committed after the game," Robinson said. "Coach (Emmett) Jones, Coach (DeShaun) Foster, and Coach (Kliff) Kingsbury were all saying that I made their day after a tough loss. I really like the offense, they throw it a lot and put up crazy numbers. Coach Jones and I were talking after the game. He was telling me that he was ready for me to pull the trigger, then I told him that I was ready.

"Coach Jones is a really good coach and I'm already very comfortable with him. He answers every time that I call, always makes time for me and we are just already very close. I feel just as close to Coach Jones as I do to my high school coach."

This was Robinson's second visit to the South Plains and first time seeing the Red Raiders play at Jones Stadium.

"The game was great," Robinson said. "The fans there are awesome and were getting crazy the entire game. The offense is very good and put up a lot of points, it was fun to watch. The defense needs work, but I'm not worried about that because they are getting some guys.

"I didn't spend a lot of time with other recruits, but I did get to meet the running back commitment for 2018 Stanley (Hackett) and we hung out a little bit before the game started. He wasn't at the game, but Cam (Jones) talks to me every day and is always on me about joining the class. He is one of the reasons I committed.

"I actually watched the game with my Dad and my cousin. My Dad was very happy about my commitment and believes Texas Tech is a great fit for me."

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound receiver admitted the commitment is an early one, but went on to share more about his decision.

"I really do not know, it just felt like the right decision," Robinson said. "I know there is a lot of time left for 2018 recruits, but Texas Tech is the right fit for me and I'm still very excited about making my commitment. Coach Jones is always talking about how well I would fit into their offense, just watching the offense in person and seeing them work made it easier too.

"It feels great knowing my commitment is made and now I can just focus on my grades, improving as a receiver and getting to where I need to be."

Robinson is not only a standout on the football field, the junior prospect is also a member of the US Junior Olympian team.

"Yes, I plan on running in college as well," Robinson said. "I run the 110m hurdles, the 400m hurdles and the 4x1 and 4x2 relays. My fastest time in the 110m was a 14.16 in the nationals and my fastest time in the 400m hurdles was a 44.14 in the nationals.

"I actually met the Texas Tech track coaches during my unofficial visit earlier this summer. They told me the decision was completely mine, but that I could run track or choose to stick with football only."

Currently unrated, Robinson continues to hear from new college programs on a weekly basis. It seems like several other programs are keeping tabs on the speedy wideout and new offers could be coming after his junior season.

He is commitment No. 5 for the Red Raiders in the 2018 class, and joins Treveon Johnson and Gabriel Douglas as the third junior wide receiver taken.
