Tech offers West Texas CB

The Texas Tech coaching staff evaluated their fair share of prospects over the summer, many of them as participants in their summer camps throughout the state of Texas on their satellite tour in early June. The Red Raiders hosted a few camps in Lubbock as well, and one of the standout players that participated was Odessa (Texas) Permian defensive back Desmon Smith.

The West Texas native was physically impressive at the camp, showing off his athleticism and ball skills coupled with his six-foot-three frame. The Texas Tech coaches didn't make a move then, however, deciding to wait and watch this fall as he performed throughout the first few games of his senior season. Defensive coordinator David Gibbs and his staff must have liked what they've seen so far, as it culminated in an offer on Sunday night.

WHAT'S NEXT?:
Even before his offer on Sunday, the Texas Tech coaching staff began to show heavy interest weeks ago, which resulted in Smith visiting for the TCU game, so he's already made a trip to Lubbock this fall. The Permian product had a great time, and he was very happy to pick up the scholarship opportunity from Texas Tech, which was one of his very favorite teams growing up as a native of West Texas. Now, he'll take a visit to Colorado State this weekend, but a decision may not come until after the end of his senior year.
IN HIS WORDS:
"It was crazy. I'm really excited about it. I've been waiting on it for a while, so I'm really glad the offer came my way," he said. "I've been hearing from Coach Curtis. He's been talking to me a whole lot, and we really talked about what they can do with my size and my speed. He called and told me what he has in mind for me, what he likes about me, and what they want to do with me."
OUR REACTION:
Smith has been on Tech's radar for months, and now the Red Raiders have taken their first legitimate step with him, offering him a scholarship after getting to see him in action a bit this fall. I think the Permian DB certainly likes what's going on in Lubbock, so it's certainly a situation for Red Raider fans to keep a close eye on.- Will McKay
