Texas Tech extends offer to out-of-state 2018 signal caller

Texas Tech extended an offer to 2018 quarterback Allan Walters last week. The Highstown (N.J.) The Peddie School product was reviewing his offers with his quarterback coach one day and, while he already has 14 offers, Walters still had other schools on his list.

“I was narrowing down my choices and seeing what was best for me, and Texas Tech caught my attention,” Walters said. “My QB coach and I were talking about schools where I would be interested in that I didn’t have offers from and Texas Tech came up, and he told me he actually knew coach Kingsbury and would reach out to him and that’s how we got in touch.”

As far as the timeline of events, Walters first talked Texas Tech with his quarterback coach about three to four weeks ago, but didn’t get into contact with Kingsbury until last week. However, Kingsbury was one of the first coaches to direct message him on Twitter on the first day of the open contact period (Sept. 1) and it was the next day when he received the offer.

“It was exciting. You don’t really see a lot of schools down South and out West reach out to New Jersey quarterbacks," Walters said. "It is certainly special. He wanted to make sure my interest was sincere before he offered me because you know at that level, you don’t want to waste an offer on a guy from New Jersey or a guy who wasn’t interested. I cleared that up and told him that I was definitely interested. He told me he was really interested, too, so we were definitely pretty mutual there, and it was exciting.”

With plenty of options on the table already for the 6-foot-2, 208-pound prospect, what made him want to reach out to a school like Texas Tech?

“Coach Kingsbury, in my opinion, is definitely one of the best upcoming coaches in all of college football,” Walters said. “He’s a young guy, really really easy to connect with. He runs a great offense, and he coaches the quarterbacks hands on which I really like. He does great things with the quarterbacks and the offense fits me really well. It is really uptempo, spread the ball out, and I feel like that is the type of quarterback that I am. I feel like it is a great fit for my style, and I feel like I can really connect with coach Kingsbury very well. I was really excited to get in touch with him and learn more about him.”

Walters said that the part of the country in which Tech is located – the QB said he was intrigued by the area – and the chance to learn from Kingsbury were big draws. The No. 15 pro-style quarterback in the country also said it was his quick release, quick reads, and always keeping his eyes down field that caught Kingsbury’s attention.

For Walters, a visit to Lubbock is already in the works as he has had a few conversations with Kingsbury about setting up an unofficial visit. He expects to be in Lubbock sometime before the season ends.
