Raiders looking at Permian DB

Odessa Permian defensive back Desmon Smith decommitted from Texas State in late August thus putting him back on the open market for the 2016 class. The three-star talent is located right in Texas Tech's backyard, and the Red Raider coaches are going to take the chance to see the prospect in person Thursday evening. Smith got in contact with defensive backs coach Kevin Curtis a few days ago who relayed him the information. The 6-foot-3 corner believes both Curtis and defensive coordinator David Gibbs will take the trip to come watch his Permian team face off versus Lubbock Coronado on Thursday.

WHAT'S NEXT?:
Keeping Permian's perfect 4-0 season alive is the top priority for the defensive back at the moment. Smith and the rest of his secondary mates have held opposing teams to only 113 yards per game through the air and have only allowed three passing touchdowns through their four games. The lengthy prospect mentioned TexasTech as his dream school and is excited for the chance to show what he can do with some Tech coaches in attendance, but at the end of the day, he understands the business he has to take care of on the field and it is just another game.
Elsewhere on the recruiting trail, Smith has an official visit set up to Colorado State and could take a visit out to Lubbock if an invite from the coaches comes. With 16 offers on the table for the prospect, Smith is keeping all his options open and is spending a lot of time sorting through the various interests from all the schools.
IN HIS WORDS:
"I was definitely excited to hear they were coming, but I'm not too worried about it; it's just another game and that's where my focus is going to be," he said. "I think they pretty much know what they're coming out for; they wouldn't be coming out if not. I'm just going to show them what I can do on the field, I can disrupt receivers, I've got size and speed, and I can cover anybody that lines up against me."
OUR REACTION:
I was in attendance at the Lubbock summer camp Smith participated in with the Red Raiders, and he certainly seems to be a good athlete with a great frame to play safety at the next level. The Tech coaches have seen him before too, however, and they know what they're looking for. It will be interesting to see if Tech moves on the DB after they see him play on Thursday night. - Will McKay
