Bill recently talked with Andre Emmett about numerous things such as playing for legendary coach Bob Knight, Texas Tech's most recent run along with other topics.

Here is Bill's exclusive Q&A with Emmett.

Tell us a short intro into your basketball background and playing career at Carter High School.

“Actually, I was a football guy first. I miss it to this day. I played whatever sport that was in season. My Carter career was pretty cool. Broke a few records but most importantly when I took basketball seriously, I decided to earn a scholarship, look out for my mom and sis, and make a possible a career from it.”

What attracted you to play for Texas Tech and head coach James Dickey? How did the possibility of playing for Texas Tech come about? What was it like to play for coach Bob Knight?

“I played in a tournament in West Texas and averaged like 40 points per game. That’s when I had attraction from Texas Tech. On my visit, Dickey made me feel comfortable. I liked that I only had a senior in my position. Damn Jayson Mitchell had me riding the bench my freshman year lol. Playing for Bobby Knight I could talk about for days. Probably the best teacher of basketball of all time. There was no game we were not prepared for. First couple days of practice we never touched a basketball nor ran a sprint. We had pen and paper learning basketball.”

Current Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard was an assistant while you were at Texas Tech. What was it like being coached by Beard, what do you remember about him as an assistant? How much do you stay in contact with him?

“Coach Beard and I stay in contact often. Beard was one of those coaches the players could talk to about ball and off the court topics. He would get on to us when needed and also be one of the first persons to pat us on the back when we did well or what we were supposed to do. Good person and obviously a good coach.”

Tell us your favorite story or memory of coach Knight. Same thing for Beard.

“Favorite is tough with Knight. So many, hard to put some over the next. Knight asked me, “Do you like me?” I replied, “Sometimes”. He then said “We’re even”. I looked at him and asked how? He replied “Well, I don’t like you when you don’t do what I tell you to do…” I straightened my face back up and replied “Ok, that’s fair.”

Beard was so cool. I don’t know if I should tell this one but hey. Knight made us all watch film 2-3 times over. One evening Beard allowed me to skip film. My bad Chris lol.”

Do you keep in touch with your old teammate, Darryl Dora? What do you think of him being on the staff?

“I think Double D is great for the program. Young and can relate to the fellas, yet experienced to advise them. And he’s passionate about the program.”

We know you were part of a very successful Texas Tech basketball run over your career, making the NCAA Tournament twice (First round in 2002, Second Round in 2004) and taking third place in the NIT in 2003. What was your most memorable moment as a Red Raider?

“My most memorable moment is probably when I graduated and a big group of fans yelled “Dre love the kids” (quote from winning the dunk contest) as I walked off the stage, or the fan support on campus during my college career, and absolutely after becoming Texas Techs’ all-time leading scorer.

What did you think of this past season’s team and the Elite Eight run? We loved the good luck video you sent out to the team and fans that was featured on the Texas Tech Athletics twitter account

“What an awesome and exciting season. I’m more excited to see the next seasons as we build from this past one.”

After you graduated from Texas Tech, you have had quite the professional career, spanning from the NBA, NBA Development League, and many international professional teams. What team are you playing for now and where are they located? Tell us about your professional career and your favorite memories so far.

"Man what a journey…that’s still going. Last few seasons I spent in South Korea earning scoring titles and MVPs. I been recently drafted 1st round 2nd pick in the BIG 3 League. Just growing and watching God’s plan manifest has been my favorite thing revealed."

How much more basketball do you want to play? Have you thought about what you want to do after your playing career?

“I’m not sure how many season I want to play. At this point I’m addressing opportunities when that time comes with ball contracts. Outside of ball, residential and commercial real estate. Maaaybe, some coaching.”

You capped off your college career by winning the 2004 slam dunk contest. You jumped over a group of kids in your final dunk to seal the championship. Many fans fondly remember this and "Dre love the kids!" What was that like?

“That was awesome. I’m pretty strategic and surprising to some. So I was confident I could win it.”

Finally, what does it mean to you to be a Red Raider?

“Being a Red Raider means a lot to me. In a transition period from a boy to a young man, I was fortunate to have the support, opportunities, and be around guys like Mikey Marshall, Andy Ellis, Kasib Powell, my second mom Leslie (to name a few) who were extended family, actual family on the east side of Lubbock, advisors, professors, and the Texas Tech community to help me along my way. I didn’t do alone. All these small but big parts made it special for me.”
