Breakdown: The Texas Tech coaching staff circled a number of wide receivers early on in the spring, extending a handful of offers. One of the first prospects to pick up an offer from the Red Raiders was Lancaster pass catcher Cartrell Thomas.

And while Tech was one of the first schools to go after the DFW native, a big number of others jumped on throughout the spring, and it looks like he could have a big fall in store on the recruiting trail, too.

Throughout the summer, however, he's mostly been focused on seven-on-seven, perfecting his craft in hopes of having a big senior season. Before this year begins, though, he's hoping to take a few visits, including out to Illinois and Texas Tech, at the end of the month. Thomas has been keeping in touch with outside wide receivers coach Emmett Jones, telling RedRaiderSports.com's Drew Kohnle about their relationship earlier this week.

“Coach Jones and I talk a lot about off-the-field stuff. He asks me how I’m doing and is always checking on me. He makes sure I’m staying on my grades and all of that and wants me to be a team leader.”

“He says he loves me as a receiver and thinks I could play inside or outside. He loves what I bring to the table, and he always tells me he would love me at Texas Tech.”

EVALUATION

Thomas would fit in as a slot H receiver at Texas Tech to a T. He's in the mold of Jakeem Grant, KeKe Coutee and Cam Batson, as he's extremely elusive, explosive, and is impressive with the ball in open space. However, unlike those guys mentioned, he also has a knack for being able to go up and get the ball against cornerbacks who often are bigger than him.

He honestly could play on either the inside or outside, something rare for a guy of his short stature. He's versatile, and that makes him very valuable. Look for a number of schools to jump on him this fall.

WHERE DOES TECH STAND?

Well, I think Tech sits as well as they want to with him right now. He and Emmett Jones stay in touch, and he obviously wants to take a visit and learn more about the program. However, the most interesting thing will be what the Red Raiders do as far as possibly taking another wide receiver.

They may take only Bronson Boyd, but they could decide to take a second player, especially a guy like Thomas who is a very different mold than Boyd. But, I do think Tech is still very, very interested in the Lancaster pass catcher.
