Notebook: New offers, junior day storylines, and more...

A look at all the new offers from the past week, a big-time visitor and the implications, a look at some early 2018 recruiting storylines, some basketball recruiting news, and a look at Big 12 recruiting in this week's notebook.

Tech extends offers (offense)

Wire built up a quick relationship with Brandon Jones before Jabbar Juluke -- who had a previous relationship with Wire from LSU -- gave him a call and extended an offer.

“When coach Jabbar Juluke left from LSU to go to Texas Tech, he took my film to the Tech coaching staff and they fell in love with it," Wire told RRS in an interview. "He said they loved it. The offensive line coach had started following me on Twitter, and we built up a quick relationship and then coach Juluke called me and offered me on Thursday.”

Wire isn't officially coming to Tech's Junior Day in a couple weeks but is "definitely" planning to make the trip to Lubbock.

Eric Morris got into contact with the speedy athlete last week and extended the offer. Despite not being in contact with Texas Tech, Bolden is very familiar with the types of athletes they have produced over the years.

"They led the country in offense and are one of the best offenses in the nation. Guys like Wes Welker and Danny Amendola went to school there, and those are guys that I look up to and they did big things in the NFL."

Bolden is in the midst of his baseball season so visiting schools for junior days are generally out of the picture. He does hope to make it to Lubbock in the summer.

Jabbar Juluke extended the offer to Vallien late Monday night. Vallien checks in at about 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds. He posted 1,000+ yards and 10+ touchdowns last season.

Leveston has seemingly been on the coaches' radar since they went and saw a Midway game this past fall (presumably to see Tanner Mordecai) and Leveston jumped out. The contact with Leveston has picked up and the coaches seemingly like the way he has progressed.

"Coach Morris just introduced me to their new offensive line coach, Brandon Jones, yesterday," Leveston said in an interview with RRS. "We mostly got to know one another and he told me some things about the offensive line at Texas Tech. They are trying to get better up front and Coach Jones wants to add the best prospects he can find on the offensive line. He actually used to play at Texas Tech and is very excited to be back there coaching."

Leveston is hoping to make it to Lubbock for the junior day on March 4.

Tech extends offers (defense)

Morgan possesses everything Gibbs is looking for in a defensive back: height. He's got good ball skills and some real good athleticism that he shows off on punt and kick returns. Texas Tech isn't take a large DB class this year, so an early offer to Morgan (Coach Scott's cousin) shows they really like him.

Texas Tech is trying to break through at Desoto and Green fits the bill as the prototype defensive back Gibbs wants in his system. Green hadn't been in contact with Tech a lot before coach Scott contacted him about the offer, but he was excited to hear from Tech and immediately set up a visit to Lubbock.

“I think Texas Tech is a great school, and I was very excited to get the offer," Green said in an interview with RRS. I was telling my brother and everything. I’ve actually already talked with the coaches and my parents about making it to Lubbock for their Junior Day.”

Green is bringing his twin brother German Green, Byron Hanspard, and Kelan Walker with him to Lubbock from Desoto.

2019 offers

Big-time Junior Day visitor

Chase has relayed to the RRS staff that he expects to be in Lubbock for Tech's junior day on March 4. Making it to Lubbock is the first step, but Chase's potential visit to Lubbock provides a unique opportunity to bust things open in Louisiana. Even if Chase doesn't commit or anything, the exposure of a guy like Chase making it to Lubbock for a visit will turn some heads and will give Juluke some firepower to work with.

Recruiting Storylines

What to expect from junior day? First and foremost, I think there could be a heck of a lot of offers extended at the junior day (or within the days following). With a list that is growing by the day, the Tech coaches have an opportunity to wow these kids, while also seeing a lot of them in person. With planned locker room upgrades, an IPF that is starting to take shape, and upgrades to the field turf, Tech has a lot to show off and grab these recruits' interest.

Where are the defensive offers? The lack of defensive offers is noted -- especially for the front seven -- but I think early March is when a lot more offers will be extended. As mentioned, junior day will be a big opportunity and when Tech locks down a DL coach, he will have to hit the ground running as well. Gibbs knows he has to "hit" on all of his offers, so being thorough with his scouting definitely makes for gray hairs waiting on offers, but they are guys that they trust in.

How "big" will Tech break through in Louisiana? This could be a big year for Texas Tech in the Bayou State and the coaches are extending tons of offers in the area. Tech's largest Louisiana crop came in 2016 when they landed John Picone, Douglas Coleman, and Kevin Moore from the state. Will Tech land more for 2018? With Juluke at the helm and a solid 2017 campaign, the harvest in Lousiana could be bountiful.

Ondigo still in the mix

2017 center prospect Malik Ondigo has been on Tech's radar for quite some time now. Texas Tech needs a recruit of Ondigo's size and are pulling out all the stops to land the recruit. With the commitment of Daniel Mading -- although Mading and Ondigo play different positions -- and the increased recruitment of Zhaire Smith, it was unclear what was now going to happen with Ondigo.

Well, things are still full speed ahead with Ondigo as Tech assistant Al Pinkins visited Ondigo on Friday when the Tech coaches were in the area for the West Virginia game. Ondigo is still deciding on visits but expect Texas Tech to land a visit from the recruit.

Around the Big 12

-Baylor added their first 2018 commits following their junior day this past week, earning commits from 5.7 ATH Joshua Fleeks and 5.7 OL Jackson Kimble. Fleeks picked up an offer from Tech last summer and Kimble was offered by the Red Raiders just a few weeks ago.

-Oklahoma added two commits from 2019 recruits (yes, 2019) in WR Theo Wease and WR Arjei Henderson.
