One of the first transfers into Texas Tech under Grant McCasland was Nevada SF Darrion Williams, the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year in 2022-23, a player that has been put on red alert by McCasland.

“Darrion as a freshman had such an impactful year,” McCasland said. “What he is, is he's a utility guy. He can really do anything. So it's been nice to have a guy who does have composure, but he's also got a physical nature to him.”

Williams, who had a three-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio in his freshman season at Nevada seems to be primed to play a major role for the Red Raiders in this 2023-24 season.

“We know what's coming, a guy who enjoys making the right play and doesn't have to shoot it to impact the game is really, really a big part of winning,” McCasland said. “Darrion is going to play a big role for us.”

On top of his strengths off the ball that McCasland highlighted, Williams has been one of the Red Raiders three-point shooters in the offseason, according to his head coach.

“It’s good, man, we're in the gym every day. I’m with Clay or AC in the gym shooting twice a day,” Williams said. “So it translates, the work works.”

Williams, the leading rebounder for the Wolfpack last season, will have the chance to help out a roster that has some size concerns on the boards, which could help him get major minutes in the offense.

“Yeah, we're not the biggest team in the world,” Williams said. “So we know we're gonna have to go in there and help Warren out against these bigger, athletic teams.”

The recruitment of Williams was helped by sophomore guard Pop Isaacs, who knew Williams previously during their time in Las Vegas.

“Yeah, when I first got in the portal, I texted him I was like, ‘Are you staying?’” Williams said. “We connected after that and then met all the coaches and made my decision.”
