Last May, only eight months ago, Mansfield (Texas) Lake Ridge dual-threat quarterback Jett Duffey was a largely unknown commodity on the 2016 list of prospects going into the summer.
All of that changed when Duffey began competing in various Elite 11 combine events this past off-season across the country - Dallas, New Orleans, Charlotte. He eventually earned the quarterbacks MVP award in Charlotte and an invitation to The Opening and the Elite 11 Finals in Beaverton, Oregon.
The Texas Tech coaches took notice and offered Duffey the following week. Timing is everything in recruiting and Duffey took only days to accept the offer, committing to the Red Raiders on May 13th.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound signal caller continued to make Coach Kliff Kingsbury and his coaching staff look smarter and smarter as the Texas high school football season started. Duffey and his Lake Ridge teammates finished the regular season undefeated, winning the District 14-5A title and advanced to the 5A state finals before falling to George Ranch in the championship.
Duffey finished the season with 2,756 yards and 29 touchdowns passing along with 1,688 yards and 19 touchdowns rushing - earning the District 14-5A MVP, APSE Class 5A All-State Offensive MVP and First Team All-State honors.
From relatively unknown to voted the best player in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in eight months, that about sums up the season for Jett Duffey - a story that might not be matched for years to come.
After earning both the Tom Landry Award and the Mr. Texas Football Award, Duffey cemented his name aside former winners Johnny Manziel, Kyler Murray, Johnathan Gray, and Jacquizz Rodgers as one of the best Texas high school football players in history.
Rated a three-star prospect, Duffey is the No. 28 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the No. 96 prospect on the Rivals.com Texas Postseason Top 100 for the 2016 class.
Duffey signed his financial aid paperwork agreement earlier this month and is set to enroll early at Texas Tech next month.
