WHAT'S NEXT?

So far all of Texas Tech’s 2017 commits are on the offensive side of the ball, so they’ll be looking to beef up the defense again in this class too.

Bernard currently stands 6-foot-1, weighs 205 pounds and was a force this season for La Porte, logging 148 tackles, nine tackles for losses, five sacks and two interceptions. As a sophomore, he was a First-Team All-District selection with similar numbers of 114 tackles, seven tackles for losses, five pass break-ups, one fumble recovery and two interceptions.

Bernard was being recruited by former coaches Trey Haverty and Kevin Curtis while they were on staff, but it appears he’s still a target for the Red Raiders despite the coaching changes on defense. Early playing time and academics are two factors Bernard has his eyes on and he plans to decide near the start of his senior season sometime.

IN HIS WORDS

“I talked to Coach Kingsbury on Twitter around Christmas and New Years. He was just saying, ‘Happy Holidays’ and wishing me and my family a Happy New Years and a Merry Christmas.”

“I really like Texas Tech. They play in one of the best conferences in the country and I just really like them.”

OUR REACTION

Things are still very early on in the process for Bernard, who isn't planning on making a decision until late in the summer. However, Tech is clearly on his mind. With Coach Kingsbury wrapping up coaching hires soon, it'll be best to circle back around on the LB once it's clear who his primary recruiter now is for the Red Raiders. -Will McKay
