MOST UNDERRATED SIGNEE

Sure the offer list isn't overly impressive, but everything else about Bryce Robinson is. Robinson has great size for an inside linebacker, can run, can hit, and is a playmaker evidenced by his 103 tackles, 7 sacks and 16 quarterback hurries this season.

CLASS LEADER

Cameron Cantrell was the second commit of the 2019 class, only behind South Oak Cliff's Steven Parker. Cantrell jumped on board early and never wavered in his commitment, signing with Texas Tech during the Early Signing Period last week.

BEST CHANCE FOR EARLY PLAYING TIME

Travis Koontz comes in to a tight end-needy team without an established player at the position. Koontz already has two years of experience playing at Ventura C.C. and while there are other names such as Donta Thompson and Mason McHorse on the roster, it would be an upset if Koontz wasn't the starting tight end to start the 2019 season.

HIGHEST POTENTIAL

Maverick McIvor is coming off a bad injury his senior year but from a quarterback standpoint, there isn't anything McIvor cannot do on the field. He posses great size, a great arm, he's mobile, he's fast, he's really the total package. I would let him redshirt and learn the system while he sits behind Alan Bowman for sure, but once he's healthy watch out. David Yost's offense at Utah State really flourished this year under dual threat quarterback Jordan Love and I think McIvor can do many of the same things Love can and probably better.

BEST RECRUITING WIN

Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon, USC, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Arizona, Baylor, Missouri, Iowa State, TCU, Minnesota, Virginia.

Those are some of the other schools Roberson held offers from when he committed to Texas Tech. A massive (literally) commitment for the Red Raiders to land him over those other schools.

MOST IMPORTANT DEFENSIVE SIGNEE

Going to cheat here and list both Ibeneme and Hogan. Why?

Because both are at positions of need. Both are highly rated and chose Tech over multiple other P5 offers. Both are at big time Houston-area schools, and landing guys like this can lead to more future successes at those schools.

Texas Tech and every other college will always be in need of talented defensive lineman and Ibeneme certainly fits the bill. There's no telling where he'd be ranked had he not missed his entire junior season. Tech should be fine this season at SDE with Eli Howard, Nelson Mbanasor, Lonzell Gilmore and others, but Ibeneme could have a chance to see the field.

Hogan is a massive piece to the future of Tech's defense. New DC Keith Patterson loves blitzing and leaving his corners on an island, and you must have good secondary play in order to make that work. Tech's biggest weakness last season was their secondary, and Hogan has a chance to make noise and see the field as a freshman.

BIGGEST MISS

No, Tech isn't out of it for Parker. By all accounts they are still considered a favorite along with TCU and a couple other schools. The miss here is not having him recommit and sign during the early period, because now it's open season and there's no telling which other schools try to jump into the picture.

If I had to guess I would say Parker still ends up at Tech, but having him signed by now would have been nice.

BIGGEST WIN FROM A RIVAL

Landon Peterson was committed to Baylor for a few months, but silently flipped his commitment to Texas Tech under the old staff. Peterson finally went public with his decision to Texas Tech on December 10th, signing nine days later during the early period.

What makes this win even a bigger one for Texas Tech is the fact that two of his teammates, DE Matt Jones and QB Peyton Powell ended up signing with Baylor, so for the new staff to keep him as a Red Raider was pivotal.

FASTEST SIGNEE

Trey Cleveland was somewhat of an unknown when he committed to Tech over the summer. He held only one other offer at the time, from Southern Illinois. At a camp at Texas Tech on June 9th, Cleveland ran a 4.44 40 yard dash, picked up his offer and committed eight days later.

His senior season for Arlington was a massive one with 1,010 yards and 13 touchdowns on a team that went 11-1.

SPECIAL TEAMS DEMON

Tyrique Matthews might not have prototypical linebacker size, but he can absolutely fly. In Patterson's 3-3-5 defense you need linebackers who can run, and Matthews certainly fits the bill there. However he can also help out on special teams, and give starters such as Jordyn Brooks and Riko Jeffers a much needed rest. Matthews is a good tackler and theoretically has everything you want on your kick and punt teams.

FUTURE YOST ALL-AMERICAN TIGHT END AWARD

Much like I said about Koontz, Simon Gonzalez has a chance to come in and play right away. However I believe Koontz will see most of the playing time, with Thompson behind him and so Gonzalez could also have a chance to redshirt, gain some weight and learn the system. New offensive coordinator David Yost has coached multiple All-American tight ends, and Gonzalez has the receiving ability, size and speed to be next on that list.
