Texas Tech and new head coach Matt Wells picked up a massive verbal commitment on Monday night when Odessa Permian offensive lineman Landon Peterson officially announced his pledge to the Red Raiders. In this edition of Commitment Evals we look at why the three-star lineman is so highly coveted and what he will bring to the field as a Red Raider.

Recruitment Snapshot

Offers: Landon Peterson holds 16 total offers, including six from Power Five programs. Peterson was previously committed to Baylor, but he re-opened his recruitment in October.

Big man on campus: Peterson is Tech's second offensive line commitment for 2019, joining Wellington's Trevor Roberson.

Visiting the 806: Peterson has so far taken at least three visits to Texas Tech, once during the summer, for the Kansas game in October, and again for the Oklahoma game in November.

"Everybody down here in West Texas loves Texas Tech and it's hard not to follow it. What I'm looking to do is just come down here and get down to business as soon as possible"

Prospect Eval

... Plays in a pistol, run-based offense in high school.

... Shows great physicality in the run game.

... Nasty demeanor, latches onto defenders and doesn't let go often taking them down to the ground for pancakes.

... Great quickness allows him to get to the second level and take on linebackers and defensive backs.

... Strong in pass protection, long arms allow him to extend and keep defenders away from the quarterback.

... Showed ability to pull and seal the edge on stretch runs.

... At 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, likely will end up being the ideal size to play tackle once he adds some weight.

Deep Dive

Landing Peterson was a big coup for Wells and staff. Coming in as a new coach, keeping a talented player from West Texas home was crucial. Even better, in many ways the Red Raiders stole him away from Big 12 rival Baylor.

Peterson and Roberson give Texas Tech two very promising offensive tackle prospects for 2019, and now the coaching staff will look to add more of an interior prospect to finish up the class.
