Cibolo Steele CB set to visit TTU

Death, taxes and the Texas Tech coaching staff recruiting prospects from Cibolo Steele.

Since the 2014 recruiting class, the Red Raiders have landed a commitment from a Steele Knight on an annual basis. It started with all-purpose back Justin Stockton, offensive tackle Terence Steele in 2015, wide receiver Antoine Wesley in 2016 and most recently dual-threat quarterback Xavier Martin in 2017.

The Texas Tech coaches are looking to continue that trend in the 2018 class with Steele corner JayVeon Cardwell.

"I have been talking with Coach (Karl) Scott and Coach (Brett) Dewhurt for about a month now," Cardwell said. "I'm going up there to visit for the junior day this weekend with my Mom and Dad. The coaches told me they really liked my highlights and they are going to come down this spring to watch our practices, evaluate me in person.

"I know that Coach Scott wants me to meet the defensive coordinator and watch some film this weekend. I'm looking forward to that and just seeing the program, meeting all of the coaches and getting to know them. I also want to tour the campus and learn more about the school, but I really want to see how well I connect with the coaching staff more than anything."

Cardwell shared his thoughts on the Red Raiders and the Cibolo Steele presence on the Texas Tech roster.

"Of course, I know all of those guys," Cardwell said. "We all have a unique relationship, but I wouldn't say those guys recruit me or anything. I'm sure Xavier will be in my ear this weekend though. I just know they have a lot of culture up there in Lubbock and that it's a very family oriented program. Texas Tech is a Big 12 school and they have struggled in conference, but they are trying to get better.

"They all really like it up there, so I'm looking forward to getting to meeting the coaches and seeing everything for myself."

The 6-foot, 175-pound corner currently holds eight (8) total offers with several other programs beginning to show interest.

"SMU, Tulsa and New Mexico all offered recently," Cardwell said. "I would say that Texas Tech, Baylor, Indiana and UCLA are the schools showing the most interest lately. I have already taken visits to UTSA, Baylor and Texas State for junior days. I'm visiting Tech this weekend, then I have visits to Tulsa and possibly Vanderbilt later this spring.

"I went to the Nike Regional in Houston a few weeks ago, and I'm going to the Rivals Camp in Dallas and the Under Armour Camp in Houston later this spring."

Rated a 5.7 three-star prospect, Cardwell finished with 54 total tackles, three (3) tackles for loss, six (6) pass breakups, three (3) fumble recoveries, seven (7) interceptions and one (1) interception return for a touchdown - earning District 27-6A All-District First Team Defense, APSE Class 6A All-State Honorable Mention and TSWA Class 6A All-State Second Team Defense honors this past season.
