For the third time this year, 2018 Euless Trinity commit Cameron Jones took a trip to the South Plains to take in Lubbock and experience another football game. He visited – and committed while on his visit – at the Louisiana Tech game back in September, but he was excited to get to Lubbock for a conference game and experience the love as a Tech commit.
“It was a conference game, so it would have been a better atmosphere, a better crowd, and it was homecoming, and I wanted to see the traditions they had going on at Tech for that. I knew they were playing a good opponent, too, so I wanted to see how they would perform coming off of the loss to Kansas State.”
Nobody was happy with the on-field result on Saturday as Tech dropped their homecoming game to West Virginia 48-17. However, even with the loss, Jones really enjoyed his time in Lubbock once again.
“I thought it was great, I still had lots of fun. The overall performance didn’t go as I would have liked, but the visit overall was great. I’m always meeting a lot of new people when I go who don’t even play football or some people who used to go to Trinity. I still had a great time being in Lubbock, and they showed me a lot of love since it was my birthday weekend.”
Jones was among an extensive list of recruits – both 2017 and 2018 – who made the trip to Lubbock this weekend, and he felt like everybody had a great time. He is also looking forward to seeing how Tech responds this weekend versus Oklahoma.
“Everybody had a great time. I really wish the boys would have played better because we had a lot of 2018 guys and some defensive guys coming in, and it makes it a little harder for me to convince them to come to Tech. It is one game, though, it happens. I wish the team would have played a little bit better, but I know they are going to go practice, work a bit harder this weekend, and have a chip on their shoulder and hopefully shock the world this Saturday.”
Since committing in September, Jones has been on a recruiting trail hot streak, scoring new offers from UCLA, Oklahoma, Indiana, and others. Just a month into his commitment, and Jones feels even better about where he stands with Tech.
“I get this question a lot. I haven’t changed. I haven’t changed at all. All the new offers are always a blessing, they are all blessings. They are something I’m going to look into, and I’m going to visit some of those schools. I come from a place where not a lot of people make it out of that town. I’m going to travel around, but my commitment level is 100 percent.
“Nothing has changed. Tech has no need to worry, I’m not going anywhere anytime soon. When I make a commitment, I’m a man of my word. That’s what my father always told me, to be a man of my word. I committed to Texas Tech, so I’m going to stick with Texas Tech, good or bad, like it or not, I’m here.”
Jones will add more offers. 6-foot-2 safeties with the speed and physicality of Jones don’t come around very often and his performance on the field is a testament to that. However, Jones says he has the best role model of them all to look up to when it comes to adding offers, Jack Anderson. Anderson holds more than 30 offers and still chose Tech, which has made a big impact on Jones and him wanting to remain a Red Raider.
“Yeah Jack is the reason why I looked into it anyways because growing up I wasn’t really a Texas Tech fan, but I got the offer, and I knew I was going to get more. My school isn’t a very highly recruited school, it is a well-known school but not highly recruited. I knew I was always going to get more offers after the performances I have been having lately. I looked into it when I got the offer from Tech, and I saw Jack Anderson. I was like this guy has an offer from (Nick) Saban, so there must be something special about this school. I’ve visited, and I loved it.
“I then visited other schools and got some new offers, then when I visited this past weekend again, nothing changed at all. I always use Jack as an example for 2018 guys. I’m always like c’mon there is a kid named Jack Anderson who has more offers than you will probably ever have, and he has been committed to Tech since his junior year. There is something special about the program. Come and get it.”
