California wide receiver set to receive Tech offer

With the recent hire of former UCLA coach Deshaun Foster, Kliff Kingsbury made it clear that he wanted to keep Texas Tech’s recruiting presence in the state. Texas Tech has added some players from California in the past and a new prospect has recently popped up on their board in Los Angeles (CA) Cathedral wide receiver Jamire Calvin. Calvin is in regular contact with both Emmett Jones and Deshaun Foster and the two coaches have expressed their desire to offer the prospect when they come and visit him during the open period beginning on April 17.

Calvin caught 53 passes for 1,000 yards and 17 touchdowns while also tacking on 530 punt return yards and another five touchdowns.

WHAT'S NEXT?:

Calvin currently has 24 division one offers and the offer list is not done growing. The 5.7 three-star recruit has recently taken unofficial visits to California and USC and has visits scheduled to Nebraska for April 16 and Maryland for April 23. Calvin hopes to schedule a visit to Lubbock soon as well especially with the school about to extend an offer. The No. 79 receiver hears from Oregon, TCU, Notre Dame, Colorado, Oregon State, and Washington State along with Texas Tech on a regular basis.

Calvin does not participate in any other sports currently and allots all of his time to perfecting his craft on the field. The California recruit has already turned heads at several Rivals camps and competitions this spring becoming a top performer at the Rivals camp in Los Angeles and the Rivals iLLSPEED competition.

IN HIS WORDS:

On the two Tech coaches recruiting him:

“The running backs coach Deshaun Foster and the receivers coach Emmett Jones. I heard from them today. They usually both reach out to me at the same time and have talked to me every day for the past few weeks. They’ve talked to me about how much they want me in their offense and the things I could do since they throw the ball around a lot.”

“I think they are both great coaches. Of course Coach Foster coming out of the NFL and being a premier running back, he is a great coach. Then the receivers coach, he has produced a lot of receivers from all the places he has coached at. Even at the high school level, he produced a lot of division one and even NFL athletes, so I think they are both great coaches and great recruiters.”

On where Tech would stand when they offer:

“They would for sure enter into my top five. They have one of the top passing offenses in the country and they would for sure be highly considered. I don’t know too much about the school, but I always grew up watching them with Michael Crabtree and stuff. I’ve always just been a big fan of their offensive style that Mike Leach brought to Lubbock.”

On future position:

“I can fit in anywhere in the slot or on the outside. I just want the ball in my hands to make plays in the open field. They’ve talked to me about playing both in their offense. On the outside I can just go up top and blow the roof off of defenses and then on the inside I can get bubble screens and reverses and everything like that.”
