The Red Raiders hosted a small group of official visitors over the weekend, landing one new commitment and maybe more importantly - reaffirming the commitments of a few longtime commitments.

One of the longtime commitments in town over the weekend was Stratford (Texas) linebacker Jordyn Brooks. The standout prospect never really wavered from his original commitment to Texas Tech this past summer, but a recent official visit to Colorado and a few programs showing continued interest had Red Raider fans a bit worried so close to National Signing Day.

Those worried can relax. Brooks enjoyed the visit this weekend and plans to sign with Texas Tech this Wednesday.

"I decided about a week ago, I'm definitely signing with Texas Tech" Brooks said. "I had to trust my instincts and go with my heart. The visit just makes me feel even better about my commitment. I had a really good time."

Brooks had unofficially visited Lubbock before, but the official visit was a different experience.

"It went really good," Brooks said. "I met a lot of people and we ate a lot. This time I got to see a lot more of Lubbock and what being a college student would be like. I mostly hung out with the players and they showed me different areas of the city, the campus, and the apartments.

"Jonathan Giles was my host for the weekend. He showed me around the campus and we went to play basketball at the rec. I really liked the rec and he also showed me around the apartments where the players live. It's a nice setup and there are some new apartments that my class will be living in."

The standout linebacker was accompanied on the visit by his teammate and friend, Ethan Davidson, and spent a lot of time with the other commitments who were in town for the weekend.

"I spent a lot of time with the San Antonio guys (Denley and Cox-Wesley) and the new commitment (Coleman)," Brooks said. "We all vibed right away and got along very well. I wouldn't say that I'm closer with any of the recruits, because we all have a big group message and we are all pretty close."

After being shown around on Friday, Brooks spent Saturday morning taking a closer look at the academic support provided at Texas Tech.

"We toured the academic side of things in the morning," Brooks said. "They showed us the support provided and if you fail, then it's really your fault. There is a ton of support, study halls, and a lot of other resources to support the athletes.

"I'm still undecided on my major for now, but I want to get a lot of my basic courses out of the way as a freshman."

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound linebacker also spent a lot of time with Texas Tech defensive coordinator David Gibbs and linebackers coach Zac Spavital.

"I spent time watching some film with Coach Spavital and Coach Gibbs. They went over some of the basic things on the defense and some of the different packages they run. Coach Spavital said there is a great opportunity to go in there and play from day one. I just have to prepare mentally, learn the defense and the opportunity is there.

"We have a great relationship and I speak with Coach Spavital on a daily basis. There wasn't a whole lot of football stuff to discuss, we mostly talked about life, the student life at Texas Tech, and not really much football specifics."

Rated a three-star prospect, Brooks chose the Red Raiders over offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Missouri, Houston, Kansas, Washington, and others. He earned District 19-5A All-District First Team Defense and All-Greater Houston honorable mention honors this season.
