Class of 2018 WR, Junior Olympian talks new Texas Tech offer

Texas Tech's 2016 satellite camp tour has been a big benefit to both Texas Tech as the program's coaches have found – and extended offers to – various 2017 and 2018 prospects that attended a Red Raider event. One of the latest prospects to receive an offer from Texas Tech's Euless Trinity satellite camp is 2018 Fort Worth (Texas) Paschal wide receiver Jaylon Robinson, who picked up his offer on Saturday.

Following the camp, Robinson started reaching out on a daily basis to wide receiver coach Emmett Jones. Texas Tech is the first program to offer the 5-foot-10, 170-pound receiver, and Robinson said he loves the fast-paced, wide-open offense that the Red Raiders run.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Along with being a rising star on the football field, Robinson is also a rising star on the track. He recently won his age group in the 400m hurdles at the USATF Southwestern Association Junior Olympic Championships and qualified for next week's National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Robinson will be participating in the 4x100m relay, the 4x400m relay and the 110m hurdle events.

On the recruiting trail, Robinson has camped with the Red Raiders and plans to camp with TCU. Robinson hears from TCU, SMU, Texas Tech, and UTSA currently. He also has plans to make a quick trip to Lubbock this week on July 21.

IN HIS WORDS:

On the offer from Texas Tech:

“When I called them, I didn’t know it was an offer. I thought he was just telling me how much they liked me and stuff, and then he (Jones) said something about them being my first offer, and I was like, ‘What? This is my offer?’ and he said yes and that they wanted to give me a full ride. He told me that I will be one of the best receivers in the class of 2018, and I would fit the program well. He said he would love to work with me, and he sees big things in my future.

“I’m very blessed. I had been waiting to pick up an offer, and it is a dream come true, honestly. They offered me early which shows that they really believe in me and feel like I could be the best.”

Why he feels like Texas Tech extended an offer so early:

“I feel like they liked my speed (ran a 4.43 40 at the Red Raiders' camp). I have real good speed and break-away abilities. When I get in the open field, I just take-off. I work on the drills with my trainer that we did at the Texas Tech camp. I had perfected them and that showed at the camp. I have really good footwork. I know how to work my hips and come out of my breaks fast.”

OUR REACTION:

The Red Raiders' early offer to Robinson is a solid indication of just how highly they view Robinson. If you watch his film, you can see why. Robinson is fast and a big-play threat with the ball in his hands. The fact that he is a Junior Olympian is a testament to both his athleticism and work ethic, two things that should pay dividends for him on the gridiron.
