Texas Tech landed a commitment from Rice transfer defensive tackle De'Braylon Carroll, an uber-experienced defensive tackle who has played a part in all four years he's been healthy at Rice.
Carroll is headed to Lubbock and will help sure up the void that is left by the departure of Jaylon Hutchings and Tony Bradford.
Carroll had a major opportunity to shine against high-level competition in 2023 as the Owls faced both Texas and Houston in the campaign, both games where Carroll flashed promise.
Let's jump into some tape.
Pass Rush
Carroll's ability in the pass rush is evident, he is able to get off his block and get to the quarterback quickly, even against higher competetion, getting to Quinn Ewers of Texas, albiet against a non-elite rep from the Texas offensive line.
He is an strong mover and is able to line up at a variety of techniques and get pressure. He survives as a nose, or zero-tech, which helps out in his run stopping ability but can play further out just as effectively.
Very strong get off, at least what's seen in his highlight tape, and he is athletic enough to make his block shedding ability worthwhile in the passing game.
He's absolutely a difference maker for this Texas Tech team in the near future and may help fix some of the pressure issues that were apparent this season.
Run Stopper
Another impressive trait of Carroll's is his ability to stop the run, being majorly assisted by his block shedding ability.
Carroll is routinely able to react to the running back and quickly make a play at or behind the line of scrimmage, showing a strong ability to make a tackle as well.
An extremely needed add for the Red Raiders, Carroll will have the opportunity to make an instant impact for Texas Tech.
