RELATED: Takeaways from Texas Tech's updated depth chart
Texas Tech is less than two weeks away from starting preseason camp, meaning the program's roster for the 2016 season is mostly set. The Red Raiders have updated their roster to include all of the true freshmen and transfers that joined the team this summer.
Here are the biggest takeaways from the updated roster:
Position by Position
- Beef up front. Texas Tech's offensive line newcomers feature a lot of size. Gio Pancotti is listed at 6-foot-5, 280 pounds, Travis Bruffy checks in at 6-foot-6, 270 pounds, Bailey Smith stands in at 6-foot-5, 300 pounds and Zach Adams is listed at an impressive 6-foot-6, 315 pounds. JUCO transfer and sophomore Jack Reichel is now on the roster as well, checking in at 6-foot-5, 290 pounds. Adams and Reichel are the two newcomers most likely to play right away.
- Size and length. The Red Raiders' two true freshman additions at receiver both qualify as big targets on the outside. T.J. Vasher is listed at 6-foot-5, 197 pounds, while Antoine Cox-Wesley, with his named listed simply as Antoine Wesley, is listed at 6-foot-5, 175 pounds.
- Get ready? Incoming freshman running back Da'Leon Ward, who may actually be in for some playing time as a true freshman, is on the roster at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds.
- Much-needed size on defense. The Red Raiders are adding some desperately needed beef on the interior of their defensive line. JUCO transfer Mych Thomas is listed at 6-foot-1, 325 pounds, Joe Wallace is listed at 6-foot-1, 320 pounds, Nick McCann is 6-foot-2, 300 pounds and Ivory Jackson checks in at at 6-foot-3, 242 pounds. The incoming defensive ends are listed as follows: Noah Jones as 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, Houston Miller as 6-foot-4, 240 pounds and Clarence Henderson as 6-foot-2, 230 pounds.
- Impressive linebackers. With John Picone enrolling early, there are just two newcomers at linebacker: Jordyn Brooks, who's listed at an impressive 6-foot-1, 235 pounds and Brayden Stringer, who's shown as 6-foot-2, 205 pounds.
- Secondary help added. In the defensive backfield, Texas Tech has four new additions. Kevin Moore is listed at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, Douglas Coleman at 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, DaMarcus Fields at 6-foot, 185 pounds and Desmon Smith at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds. That's a much-needed injection of length and size into the secondary.
