Ennis (Texas) safety Jah'Shawn Johnson committed to Texas Tech in
August but that didn't stop several programs, namely Baylor and Texas, from
continuing their pursuit of the three-star standout late into the 2014
recruiting cycle. He ultimately stuck with his commitment, and will arrive on
campus looking to crack the rotation at safety.
Johnson is profiled below in the latest installment of our signee Q&A feature which we are running on all of the members of
the Red Raiders' 2014 signing
class.
Thoughts and opinions:
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOTBALL PLAYER OF ALL TIME?
"Probably Deion Sanders."
WHAT IS THE BEST FOOTBALL TEAM THAT YOU'VE EVER SEEN, IN PERSON OR ON
TELEVISION?
"I believe this last year's Seahawks team."
An up-close and personal look:
YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM YOUR FOOTBALL CAREER?
"The kick return I had against Mesquite Poteet. Our team had cut it down before
half, and they went and scored with like 2 minutes left. I had a big kick return
touchdown to get us back in the game before half time. It gave us a lot of
momentum."
DID YOU EVER HAVE AN EMBARASSING MOMENT PLAYING FOOTBALL?
"Oh yeah. Yes yes. Basically I had two of them in the same game. I got stiff
armed pretty bad by this running back from Red Oak. Then I tried to de-cleat him
one time and he hit me with his forearm and I went flying back."
DO YOU HAVE A PREGAME RITUAL?
"Not really."
WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALIZE THAT YOU HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BE A DIVISION I
FOOTBALL PLAYER?
"It'd have to be my sophomore year. I had a great sophomore year. My coaches and
other people were telling me all the potential I had. And then my dad and all
that was just starting to kick in."
Thoughts on Texas Tech:
WHAT POSITION WILL YOU BE PLAYING AT TECH?
"I believe free safety."
ARE YOU EXPECTING TO REDSHIRT YOUR FIRST SEASON ON-CAMPUS?
"I am not, but if they need me to, I'd be fine with it."
WHAT IS A PERSONAL STRENGTH THAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE TABLE AT TECH?
"I feel like I am a big playmaker. I am always somewhere around the big play
when we need it the most."
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU NEED TO WORK IN ORDER TO PLAY AT THE NEXT
LEVEL?
"It'd definitely be my man coverage."
HOW OFTEN DO YOU WORK OUT AND WHAT IS YOUR ROUTINE?
"I workout every day. I do different things every day, so it's kinda hard to
talk about."
Personal preferences:
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
"Sometimes I hang out with my friends. Sometimes I just watch different football
things. Trying to learn new things like on YouTube and stuff like that.
Sometimes I just play Xbox."
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?
"I'd have to say pork chops."
DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME?
"No not really. All my friends call me Shawn J but that's it."
HAVE YOU DECIDED ON WHAT YOU WANT TO MAJOR IN AT TECH?
"Not really. I'm leaning towards kinesiology."
HAVE YOU MET ALL OF THE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS TO ENROLL AT TECH?
"I believe so."
A look at the recruiting process:
WHAT ONE THING WAS THE DETERMINING FACTOR IN YOUR DECISION?
"Definitely my relationship with the coaches and playing time. They said I could
get playing time pretty early."
IS THERE A TECH COACH THAT YOU FEEL ESPECIALLY CLOSE TO?
"It's kinda hard between coach Haverty and coach Morris."
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT DURING THE PROCESS?
"The visits are probably my favorite."
WHAT WAS THE WORST PART ABOUT THE PROCESS?
"Just the constant calls and the interviews."
DID YOU MAKE FRIENDS WITH ANY CURRENT PLAYERS AT TECH OR INCOMING
FRESHMEN DURING THE PROCESS?
"I came closer to Malik. He was my high school teammate."
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR OFFICIAL VISIT TO TECH?
"Just hanging out with the guys and seeing what they do on the weekends."
WHAT SCHOOL WOULD YOU HAVE CHOSEN IF YOU HADN'T SIGNED WITH THE RED
RAIDERS?
"I think Baylor."
The future and goals:
WHAT NUMBER WOULD YOU LIKE TO WEAR AT TECH?
"No. 7 or No. 5. Either one. No. 5 because my dad had it for college and high
school. When I used to watch him, that's all I'd see. Watched old tape of him
and he stuck out. It became a family number. The No. 7, I came into high school,
and I was on varsity as a freshman and that's the number they gave me. I stuck
with it, and it just started to become my favorite number."
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL GOAL FOR THIS SEASON?
"Really just going out there and making plays however I can. Just helping the
team out wherever really."
WHEN WILL YOU ARRIVE IN LUBBOCK FOR GOOD?
"I come down June 1st, and then I have to leave for graduation, but I'll be back
on like the 8th."
