Recruiting Notebook: New offers, commits, and more...

With Signing Day just around the corner, things are starting to heat up for Tech on the recruiting trail. New offers, the open period bringing out new targets, PWOs choosing Tech, and much more.

Texas Tech extends offer to JUCO defensive back

The Texas Tech coaching staff recently extended an offer to Cerritos C.C. safety Elijah Walker. The coaching staff confirmed the offer with Walker when DB coach Karl Scott and WR coach Emmett Jones visited Walker in person.

The former KSU commit is excited for the offer due to the opportunity to bring Tech's defense to the same level as the offense.

“Coach Scott was telling me that it was a great school with great programs and everything," Walker told RRS following the offer. "He said the offense is top-notch and that they just need some help on defense. That’s what I see with Texas Tech, with a great defense, they could be the best team in the Big 12 because no one can really stop their offense. They score 40 points on every single team, so I feel like with a great defense they could have a really good overall team.”

Walker will be in Lubbock on the 27th, and the Tech coaches have the last chance to make a big impression.

What the offer means:

-Immediate assumption would be a potential decommit or roster attrition, but the real fact of the matter is that Texas Tech needs to increase the competition level at the defensive back position and are diligently working to add the best guys possible to the group.

Tech lands transfer defensive back

Former class of 2016 defensive back Austin McCarther announced his transfer via Twitter yesterday. The 6-foot-1 defensive back played in two games this past season for Sam Houston State, recording one tackle in two games.

McCarther played at the same high school as Jett Duffey and recorded 39 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, one INT, four pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and a blocked kick during his senior season.

Montana preferred walk-on commits to the Red Raiders

Baker Montana QB Luke Gonsioroski announced his commitment to the Red Raiders after visiting the South Plains this past weekend. Gonsioroski committed to Texas Tech as a preferred walk-on. While preferred walk-ons can definitely become stars in their own right, Gosnioroski's commitment is special for a few reasons: He's from Montana and just six months ago he had a 16-hour surgery to remove an eight-pound tumor while also undergoing four rounds of Chemo.

After all that, he just balled out his senior year and earned his PWO offer to Texas Tech.

Storylines to watch as NSD approaches...

-Will Texas Tech hold onto Adam Beck?

After decommitting from Houston and choosing the Red Raiders over the summer, Beck has kept things pretty close to the vest. He is still committed and has recently expressed how solid he was in his commitment...but some recently vague tweets have led people to question. He is still on for his visit this weekend (which could shore things up), but there are a lot of potential suitors after his services. He's the biggest one to watch on NSD.

-Will Tech get their edge rusher?

David Anenih is the top target for the Red Raiders and has been for the longest time. The coaches have been putting the full court press on Anenih ever since they offered the DE in the summer. Some late pursuit by Baylor has made Tech fans anxious. Will Tech land their lone edge rush target? A last weekend visit to Lubbock should leave a lasting impression. Anenih is still very very interested.

-How will Tech close the class?

With potentially two to four spots open, how will Tech close the class on NSD? Most of the commits (minus Beck) have re-affirmed their commitment to the Red Raiders. Will they hold onto Beck? Will any new names pop up? Is a high school offensive lineman in the cards? And if they don't land Anenih, what pass rusher will they sign? We will know on February 1...

Around the Big 12

-The Baylor Bears upped their commitment total from 8 to 12 (all in one day) this past week when they landed three OL and an ATH. OL Eleasah Anderson, Xavier Newman, and Jason Moore committed to the Bears, with former TCU commit Tristan Ebner committing as well.

-The Iowa State Cyclones added three new commits to their class this past week (22 total commits) when Michigan OL Robert Hudson, Florida DB OJ Tucker, and California DT Tucker Robertson committed to the Cyclones.

-TCU added commits 12 and 13 this past week when Abilene OL Coy McMillon and Florida DT George Ellis committed to the Horned Frogs.

-Texas added commit No. 14 this past week when two-star defensive end Max Cummins committed to the Longhorns.
