Below are Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt's opening thoughts during Tech Media Days.

Football Notes:

-Believes you win games in the spring and summer. Based off of what he has seen this offseason, expect big things from the football team this year.

-"The minute they got back from Houston, they went back to work."

-Sold second-most football season tickets in Tech football history.

-September 17 (Louisiana Tech game) inviting all former baseball players back to Lubbock.

-October 22 (Oklahoma game) scheduled to induct a new member into the ring of honor.

-November 5 (Texas game) Hall of Fame/Hall of Honor weekend.

-Fearless Champion campaign -- $110 million raised to date.

-North Endzone project on track to be 99% completed by kickoff on September 3. Will be open and ready for the public.

-July 2017 is the expected date that the new football training/indoor facility will be finished.

Baseball Notes:

-Wait list of 400 individuals for baseball season tickets already.

-During all the "Tadlock to Texas rumors", Hocutt and Tadlock were playing golf. On the 15th hole Tee-box at Lubbock Country Club, Tadlock and Hocutt drafted a statement on the back of the golf scorecard to end all speculation of Tadlock and his leadership at Texas Tech.

-"We are going to bring home the national championship trophy."

Basketball Notes:

-Sold more season tickets in Men's basketball than they have all of last year, and it is only August.

-$2.5 million dollar scoreboard project for the United Supermarkets Arena.

-New high-def screens will be 4x the size of screens in the older display.

-There will be four screen displays in each of the four corners of the arena. The TV screens are Mitsubishi brand (same as Cowboy stadium). 36 new speakers added as well. Speakers will be "first class"

Overall Tech athletics:

-Hocutt spent two-three minutes discussing all the championships and accolades produced by baseball, soccer, tennis, football, basketball and many others. He took the time to recognize Trey Culver (National Championship) and Bradley Adkins (Olympics).

-3.0 average GPA among student athletes last year, 174 student athlete's on Dean's and President's list.

-"From within Tech Athletics, the best is yet to come."

Big 12 Expansion:

-Hocutt has his thoughts and opinions, but he will be sharing those with President Schovanec and Bob Bowlsby only.

-Expansion process will continue, does not mean expansion will happen. School presidents will meet (with Bob Bowlsby) in October to discuss expansion and the candidates.

-Two team, four teams, or staying put at 10 are all options on the table.

  2:00pm--Kliff Kingsbury

-Responded to Rusty Whitt and the change in the offseason really well. The best shape they have been in before the season they have ever been in.

-No-nonsense, accountability, pushing athletes to the limit. Has been a great fit so far.

-His (Mahomes') presence in the workouts, film sessions, training sessions was big. Just having him there was so important.

-Year four and likes where his program is at. Has learned, adapted, and has changed things for the better. His 'spin' is on everything now.

-Coach Gibbs in his second year, players understand what he is about. The assistants understand what he is about.

-The defensive players are 'eager' to make change. Won't happen overnight but saw strides in the spring.

-The most depth at wide receiver. Three to four deep at every position. Lots of competition and will be a 'dog fight' this year. Interested to see who rises to the top in camp.

-Singled out Gary Moore, D'Vonta Hinton, Luke Stice, as guys who have stepped up and had big springs. Will be looked at for leadership and to be the key pieces this year.

-They feel really good about four guys right now on the OL, they are just waiting to see them compete enough to solidify a fifth spot. Wheeler, Akamnonu, and Stawarz were mentioned as potential "fifth" options.

2:14pm--Joe Robinson

-Wants the best players on the field. May see some younger faces than they are used to seeing. 2016 class expected to fill in a lot on special teams.

-Clayton Hatfield very smart, very confident. Has a lot of qualities to be a really good kicker.

-Michael Barden in the lead for punter. Would have been tops in the country if he would have had more punts to his name.

-Have plenty of guys who can advance the ball up the field on kickoffs, just need the other 10 guys to be on the same page and block.

-Nobody has a job secured at punt returner. Wants the job to be wide open. Cam Batson obviously has the most experience, but he is treating everyone as the number one guy.

-Very high on Kingsbury and what he can do/has done. Has enjoyed his time in Lubbock so far.

2:22pm--Karl Scott

-Considers himself a local. Things have finally slowed down for him, was definitely fast-paced when he first got to Lubbock.

-Defensive backs have done a good job in the weight room of transforming their bodies. They past the "eye-ball test" now.

-Have a mixture of older and younger guys. Two-edged sword, old guys know the lay of the land, but it is harder to break old habits.

-Preaches "be a man" taking care of business--whether going to class or moving to cover-three.

-Justis Nelson is the swiss army knife who can do a lot of things on the field. You don't want the best corner or the best safety on the field, you want the best five defensive backs on the field.

-Freshmen have made a big impact. Wake-up call with Coach Whitt

-"Football is played in pads" It is easy to be fooled by guys without pads on. Doesn't want to fall into that trap of praising guys just yet after only short and t-shirt workouts. Will give us an answer in two weeks...

-Paul Banks III has really progressed in a big way.

-Working to cross-train everybody. New guys -- Fields, Moore, Smith, Coleman -- are learning cornerback and safety. Playing both positions. At the end of fall camp is when they will decide to nail down positions.

-Douglas Coleman, "You tell him to run through a brick wall, he will say 'how fast?'" Typical Louisiana kid. Just because you are a freshman doesnt mean you can't set the tone -- Coleman has helped set the tone.

-Was excited to recruit Kevin Moore and John Picone to Louisiana Tech, even more excited when he got to Texas Tech.

-Kevin Moore has the 'mojo.'

-The two biggest things: Being consistent and responding to adversity is what he is working to instill to his defensive back group.

2:37pm--Zac Spavital

-Culture, toughness, and accountability -- all started with Rusty Whitt. Preaching a tougher and physical defense. Karl Scott and Kevin Patrick have also helped.

-Has always noticed a big jump form year one to year two in Gibbs' system.

-Expecting a lot of the newcomers to play and play a lot.

-Have made adjustments to their scheme based off of what they saw last season. Spent a lot of time this offseason changing up some things to put them in better position schematically. Install of this is a lot farther along than last year.

-Depth is a big plus. It isn't just having bodies, but having bodies they feel can contribute and play. They have that this year.

-Were very fortunate to get Luke Stice as a walk-on at Houston. Even better having him at Tech. Mature, tough, leader, "his value is huge."

-Spavital said Stice is exactly what he needed in his linebacker room.

-"We are better with Luke Stice being around."

-D'vonta Hinton has made some great gains in regards to strength and conditioning but Spavital says he needs to learn how to last. Have put a lot on the table with him and are expecting big things.

-Malik Jenkins is the linebacker group's swiss army knife. Has changed his body and his endurance and positioning. Expect to compete for a starting job and are expecting big things.

-What John Picone went through this spring was 'total torture.' They don't even look at him like a freshman.

-Pleased where the new kids are at mentally and physically. Jordyn Brooks at 243 pounds. Brayden Stringer has played linebacker his whole life which has been a big plus.

-Jordyn Brooks, "A grown man." Been maturing this whole summer, taking care of business, and Spavital is very excited.

-Wants his group to be more physical at the point of attack and wants more people on the ball. Closing space and being physical have been the emphasis.

2:49pm--Kliff Kingsbury

-Feels like they are in a good place. Players look bigger, stronger, and faster.

-Awesome to see four QBs he has coached starting at D1 programs. They have all worked hard and they all deserve it.

-Davis Webb is a "tremendous talent" and the sky is the limit with him. He will tear it up this year.

-Would consider playing in Australia -- like Cal -- this season.

-Visiting other teams (NFL mostly) allows him to pick up practice structure, drills, overall way of evaluating programs who produce at a high level and getting things from them.

-The quarterback run game will continue to evolve and he thinks will continue to expand.

-To have a true football offseason has been big. A heck of an offseason for him. Footwork, technique, all of it. His pre-snap reads will help him be better this season.

-Jett Duffey will have a "big future" whenever that will be.

2:56--DeShaun Foster

-Really talented group in his room. While he was learning the offense, it helped having some running backs who knew what they were doing.

-Felton and Dauphine had big springs.

-Foster and UCLA wanted Justin Stockton out of high school and was excited to have him in his room.

-Justin Stockton will carry the load this year. He is explosive, and they have been working hard to prepare him physically to carry the load.

-They are expecting Stockton to get the bulk but there should be plenty of carries to go around. Just a game-by-game basis in regards to carries.

-They will give Da'Leon Ward a chance to prove himself this fall. If he earns it, he earns it.

-He wants all the guys to prepare like they are the starter. You never know when you are going to play.

-Availability is the biggest thing for Foster. If they can't see you, you can't play and they don't know what you can do. Whether staying healthy, keeping grades up, etc. He wants them to remain available.

3:04pm--Patrick Mahomes

-Watched baseball all the way especially in the postseason. Baseball set the tone for what they want to accomplish on the football field.

-Coach Whitt brought a new mentality. Never take a backseat to anyone. He (Whitt) wanted the team to gain weight to be on par with some of the better teams in the country.

-Learning all the position groups will make him a better quarterback. Working on the little things is very important to him.

-Mahomes knows the offense inside and out which has helped with his connection with Kingsbury.

-More crisp with the routes. Everything will be right on time and where it needs to be.

-Hoping to keep the crispness while also increasing the tempo during fall camp.

-Devin Lauderdale has come back strong, and he is very excited about Devin. Willies, Cantrell, and Batson are guys who have really stepped up.

-Cam Batson is competing every day and winning every single race. He is excited about his progression and is exciting to see him step up.

-Cantrell is going to prove to people he can be that go-to receiver this year. Taking care of his body and making sure he is ready physically and with his health.

-On OL younger guys have tremendous talent. They are trying to be some well-known offensive linemen and not just 'guys.'

-Will cut turnovers down this year. Wants to cut his interceptions in half. Wants to free-lance and make the big plays but will be more apt to take off for the easy three-yard gain instead of throwing the ball into traffic.

3:13pm--Nic Shimonek

-Whitt's biggest philosophy "Finishing everything you do." Finish everything strong. Practices, games, etc.

-Thinks the quarterbacks need to continue watching film, can never watch too much film. Wants everybody in the QB room to be in tip-top shape to win a lot of games.

-Back-ups have to pretend they are the starter, game plan like he is the starter, and he has to be ready.

-He wants Pat to be as good as he possibly can. He will be in his ear if he misses a throw, he is going to be there to push Pat everyday in practice and in the weight room.

-The biggest thing he has learned from Kingsbury is being a professional in everything and in every aspect.

-Derrick Willies isn't very in-your-face. Comes to work everyday and puts in the extra work. He is a freak athletically, can jump out of the room. Once he gets more experience in the system, he is going to be ready to do big things.

-They will have a lot of freedom this year and will build a lot on what they did last year.

-Luke Stice is a guy not many people know, but they should. He watches more film than anyone. He leads by example, vocal leader, and will be a good addition.

3:21--Cameron Batson

-A great offseason. Coach Whitt and his staff have done a very good job of preparing them at this point in the offseason.

-He is working to put himself in that position to take over for Jakeem. Having to wait his turn has given him the attitude that it is now "his time" and he isn't going to let anyone take his shine or take that away from him. He has waited his turn, and he is going to seize the opportunity.

-The biggest takeaway he learned from Jakeem is technique and how to work around defenders and coverages and find the open spot.

-Want to be No. 1 statistically in everything they do. The biggest thing for the group is making Pat's throws look great and looking out for him and making sure he has the best year possible.

-He (Majomes) can make those consistent plays a lot more often because he has had a whole offseason to learn and watch film.

-KeKe Coutee and DeQuan Bowman have progressed nicely. He has seen some things from their games that he has liked. They make some good moves and has raised the competition level.

3:29pm--Justin Murphy

-8 months out from surgery and has been working to build back. Chomping at the bit and ready to get back on the field.

-Challenging to watch from the sideline, but is now ready to go.

-Murphy went from looking up to guys like Clark and Kaster to now being the one that the other guys look to. He has really taken on that role.

-Baylen Brown grows every year. Murphy has enjoyed watching him grow as a player and mature throughout the year.

-Steele has developed into a great offensive lineman and will continue to develop. He will be a big piece of their line at right tackle.

-Hays wants them to build chemistry and build consistency. Wants to be consistent play in and play out. When they play up to the level they know they can play, everything will fall into place.

-He knows the OL's role. They need to be consistent for Stockton and they need to be consistent for Pat so they can keep the offense rolling.

-Controlled aggression.

-Gary Moore, Breiden Fehoko, Kris Williams and Talor Nunez have guys who have really stepped up on the defensive line from his perspective.

-Broderick Washington has also really stood out. He brings the aggression.

3:39pm--Malik Jenkins

-Felt like they had a really really good offseason. Energy has been high from Coach Whitt and the newcomers.

-There hasn't been an easy day with Coach Whitt so far. The more you get into the workouts, the better you are going to be. Whitt pushed him to a new level.

-The mental aspect that Coach Whitt has instilled has been really big. Their workouts are split into the four quarters plus an overtime.

-"We are definitely going to be ready for every quarter this year."

-They (Stringer and Brooks) have come in and ready to work. Redshirt or not, they have had the right attitude.

-Luke Stice will play and will play a lot.

-Jenkins feels like his confidence level is very high. No reason to not be the best and lay it all out there and have a big year. He knows all the positions and is ready to go out there wherever he is needed.

-Being another year into Gibbs' system has really helped them mature and believes everything will go more smoothly. Each position group knows what the other position group is doing.

-Hinton and Picone are two guys that have really stood out to him.

-Spavital recruited Jenkins out of high school and their relationship goes way back. He feels comfortable with Spavital and likes where things are going with him.

-Being a more disciplined team and not folding under pressure is something that has been stressed a lot.

3:48pm--Justin Stockton

-Ready to attack this fall camp.

-Has really enjoyed getting to learn from Foster. They have learned a lot from him, both on-the-field and off-the-field.

-Foster has given them a packet of what they need to do to be "pro-ready."

-He understand there is a great room of running backs like a "lion in the jungle" ready to take his spot. If he isn't on point, there are guys who could get in there and make a play happen instead.

-Foster tells Stockton he wants him to be an all-around back. Blocking, running, pass-catching.

-He is ready for whatever -- running the ball 17 or 20 times or catching the ball -- he is ready to do whatever helps the team get yards. Running between the tackles, whatever.

-Felton and him are friends, they are family, but they got to eat. They got to get their own. They know that if they mess up, the other one will be there.

-Da'Leon Ward is hungry, but he has to learn the plays. When he doesn't even know the play, you can still tell that 'he has it.'

-Stockton feels like Dauphine can get in the game right now and play. Everybody makes mistakes and Dauphine is still learning, but he can play right now.

-Even though they have lost a lot of guys, they know they need to keep a certain level or even exceed that level.

3:56pm--Devin Lauderdale

-Happy to be back with the team. He did what he had to do to get back and is enjoying it and is living in the moment.

-Coach Whitt told him, "I'm not going to make it easy on you."

-Accountability and intensity has been big things that Coach Whitt has brought.

-He wants to be a vocal leader and lead by actions, coach the young guys up and 'may the best man win.'

-"He (Jones) is way different than the guy we had last year." He preaches the technique and consistency.

-TJ Vasher and Antoine Cox-Wesley will be good but it will take some time.

"Mark my words, though, these guys will be All-Stars in two years."

-Since it is his last year, Lauderdale is predicting a very big year for him.

-They lost a lot of key players on offense, but it is important to just have guys who step up to keep their same level on offense.

-Mahomes got faster and bigger. He has gotten a lot smarter, too. He will be a better quarterback this year because has grown a lot and matured and understands the game better.

4:05pm--Breiden Fehoko

-Coach Whitt has done a great job of not only getting them physically ready but mentally ready. Guys have bought in and are ready for the season.

-He is grateful for what Coach Whitt has done for him. He has always pushing their limits and pushing their buttons. They wouldn't have reached the mindset they needed without him.

-Year one was a learning experience and was grateful to be thrown into the fire early and have the opportunity to play.

-Year two has helped him know what he needed to do and adjust to the speed. Not where he wants to be yet, but he knows what it takes.

-Kevin Patrick has installed an "attack" mindset. Gain the line of scrimmage, not only control your gap, but also go forward and make a play.

-He (Patrick) has a passion for the game that makes him want to play harder for him.

-Patrick has had great things to teach which makes Fehoko excited to start fall camp.

-Broderick Washington is a bulldozer. He gets what he wants.

-Having quality depth instead of just depth is what will put this team over the top this year.

-People misunderstand Joe Wallace because of his size, but he can move.

4:11pm--Kolin Hill

-Summer was intense, workouts were intense and they had a different situation everyday.

-Has gotten used to Lubbock, the school, the playbook, he is adjusted and ready to go.

"Hungry. I'm hungry. I'm excited for the opportunity."

-He feels very comfortable with Coach Patrick and Patrick has changed a lot with their unit.

-Patrick stresses batted balls. Sacks are important, but Patrick is stressing getting their hands up and batting the balls down because the ball comes out so fast.

-Very close defensive line group. Last year a lot of the guys were more individuals, but this year they are much closer.

-They will be more physical for sure. They have bigger bodies and they will force more turnovers.

-Very exciting to have his brother join the team. He has played with him his whole life and they are very comfortable.

"They (Pipkins and Fehoko) are going to have breakout seasons. They are big guys, they are strong guys."

-Stockton and Batson are guys on offense he feels like will have breakout years.

-Mahomes is one of the best QBs he has gone against. He (Mahomes) is a very confident guy.

4:21pm--Luke Stice

-It has been a real special deal for him to come back to the area. The offseason has been phenomenal so far. Championships are won in the summer heat.

-The offseason is when you pay a price for championships and bringing Whitt has helped with that.

-Was fired up for the opportunity to rejoin the coaches (Gibbs and Spavital). They have a phenomenal gameplan and now it is time to execute.

-He understands it is his last year and whatever he wants, he needs to go and get it now.

-Attitude and effort are the two keys to what he does everyday. That is all he can control, and he will push those areas.

-Gets a lot of confidence from competing against the best offense all day.

4:32pm--Ondre Pipkins

-Has dropped the weight he has needed to drop to be efficient and effective on the DL.

-Went from 348 to 309 pounds.

-They have a lot more guys that they can depend on this year.

-He just wants to have fun. He hasn't had fun playing football in awhile. Ready to have fun on the football field and win games, too.

-He wants to be the guy the team can count on. In tough times, he wants his teammates to know that he is going to go get it.

-He has developed a good relationship with all the guys both old and new. They all fit in with each other.

-It is a good feeling to have depth, but they need to make sure they know what they are doing. It is up to him and the leaders to make sure they know what they are doing and are in the playbook. They need depth that can play.

-Has been happy to mentor Broderick Washington and getting to know him.

"Man, he (Coach Patrick) is intense. He is very intense. He brings that fire."

-The expectation is to definitely not be the second-to-last defense in the country. It is a slap in the face to the defensive guys. He wants them to stop the run and give the offense life so they don't feel so much pressure.

-Getting better started day one of workouts.
