Leyton Stone gaining new perspective on Texas Tech after OV

Leyton Stone on his official visit this weekend
Leyton Stone on his official visit this weekend (Leyton Stone)

Growing up around Texas Tech his whole life, Wolfforth (TX) Frenship WR Leyton Stone did not need to be sold on the program like others who get recruited.

Donning the red and black has seemingly been his destiny, this dream coming to fruition when he committed to the Red Raiders in November 2023. Stone’s focus shifted from getting recruited to being the recruiter, and he was a part of another loaded official visit weekend for Texas Tech.

We caught up with the soon-to-be-senior wide receiver about his experience and what he gained from these days dialed into the program.

What was the visit like for you? What all did you get to do and experience?

“The visit itself was definitely a different look for me. I’d been around Tech for a long time but now I’m really getting to understand what it’s like to be a Red Raider. I’ve really wanted to have that feeling since I was little, like I love the Red Raiders.

They’ve always had a special spot in my heart but now knowing that I’m going to be a football player for them just gave me a different feel. It’s always been a dream of mine to play there and just had the emotions and all that stuff.

Just learning to understand the playbook already and being able to really feel like I’m part of the team is a great feeling for me and I’m excited to get the show on the road…

It was cool because I already knew the coaches really well, there’s no awkward or anything. The first day I drove to the hotel, first time I’ve ever stayed in a hotel in Lubbock, can’t say I’ve ever done that before.

But we went to lunch in the north endzone (at Jones AT&T Stadium) and that was awesome, talking to all the coaches. I drove around with (special teams analyst) coach (Tyler) Schovanec. It was fun, we saw the campus and drove around and talked about life.

Then we went to photoshoots, as you can see from the pictures they’re great, they’re definitely stepping up their official visit looks. We had a lot of fun doing that, there was only seven of us on the visit.

The next day we went to breakfast and hung out a lot. Me and Coy went to lunch in the indoor and we toured the facility. It's massive. What’s being built right now is absolutely huge and it’s going to be the best facility in the nation. Mark my words. It’s definitely going to do a lot with more recruits coming, great players.

We went to (head coach) Joey (McGuire’s) house yesterday, that was fun, hung out there. Then me and Coy went hog hunting last night.”
