West Texas athlete stands out at Tech camp

Texas Tech signed Amarillo High standout defensive lineman Ivory Jackson in the 2016 class. While watching Jackson at countless times last season, the Tech coaching staff stumbled upon OL/TE prospect Tyler Carr. Over the past few months, Carr has been in contact with both Coach (Eric) Morris and Lee Hays and was recently in Lubbock last weekend for a two-day camp.

The six-foot-six, 250-pound prospect usually stayed in tight to block in Amarillo High’s wishbone offense; however, once arriving to Lubbock last week, Carr’s position status changed. With Hays recently filling up the offensive line spots, the need to see Carr perform as an offensive lineman dissipated and Hays set up Carr to workout with defensive line coach Kevin Patrick during the camp. The result of the position switch?

Carr took home the OL/DL MVP award last weekend and was apparently the best looking defensive line prospect during the camp, constantly displaying solid technique and winning many one-on-one battles.

WHAT'S NEXT?:

Carr started out his playing career at Canadian High School, then transferred to Tascosa for his sophomore season, transferred to Amarillo High during his junior season, and has found himself back at Canadian for his senior year. At Canadian, Carr will get the chance to show off his skills on both sides of the ball as he is expecting to start both ways.

Along with the Texas Tech camp, Carr was recently camped at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State camps where he worked out at defensive line and tight end respectively. He is also planning to attend a UT camp and was invited to a USA National Team development game in July. With Tech, Carr is just waiting to see how things play out as Coach Patrick immediately got in contact with him following the camp and the two are looking to keep in touch.

IN HIS WORDS:

On winning MVP:

“I felt like I showed Coach Patrick a lot of good things. I know I still have a lot to work on, though. We did a lot of hand placement and footwork stuff, a lot of the drills he does with his players. I tried to show out as much as I could and my size, speed, and technique was a big advantage and really helped. I think all of that just showed out especially in the one-on-ones. I think that helped a whole light and showed I was there to work. Over the course of the weekend I started to talk with Coach Patrick and Coach Gibbs a lot more.”

On where things stand moving forward:

“We talked a little bit about it. Coach Patrick has been in contact just trying to get to know me right now, but he said we would talk about it later in the summer. He did say there are some guys he wants to go after right now, but did say that he really likes me and wants me up there. He thinks I could be real good.”

OUR REACTION:

Carr is a raw prospect at defensive end and playing at 2A Canadian may not afford the best competition to refine his skills against. However, Carr has tremendous size and showed at the camp that he has the ability to turn into a good prospect. His standout performance at the Tech camp has, at the very least, made him a prospect to watch moving forward.
