Verhulst excited to get to Lubbock

With interior offensive linemen Jack Anderson, Dawson Deaton, and Tyler Castaneda already in the fold, Texas Tech offensive line coach Lee Hays is shifting his focus to offensive tackle, which could be the final take in the 2017 class on the O-line.

Hays has only four offers out to offensive tackles in the 2017 class currently with one of them being to Plano East (TX) prospect Casey Verhulst. Texas Tech was Verhulst’s first offer back in December, and the six-foot-six offensive tackle has since added another five offers—Houston, Colorado, Colorado State, Rice, and UTSA—over the past couple months. Texas Tech has been keeping tabs on Verhulst and have sent him many hand-written letters recently with Verhulst also keeping in close contact with Coach Hays.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Verhulst has definitely seen his recruitment take off recently, picking up various offers and receiving a lot of interest from coaches in these past couple of weeks. He has plans to visit the two Colorado schools that have offered him, Texas State, Rice, Houston and plans on being in Lubbock in early March.

Verhulst already visited the University of Houston recently for a Junior Day and really loved the experience. The Plano East product already feels a strong connection with Tom Herman and his staff, and Herman made it very clear to him how much he could help out the Houston Cougars. Texas Tech is definitely not out of the running, though and Verhulst is excited to get to Lubbock saying that the city is a “whole bunch of everything inside a whole bunch of nothing, and I like that.” In fact, if the visit goes well, Verhulst can see himself pulling the trigger and joining the Scarlet and Black.

IN HIS WORDS

“I reach out to Coach Hays a lot through Twitter and stuff," he said. "He has recently been sending me the blueprints from their new indoor facility just trying to get me more excited to come down. I am coming down to Lubbock soon at some point in March. It is absolutely on my list.”

“I’ve been talking to Jack (Anderson) and Dawson (Deaton) and they told me that they will try and be in Lubbock that same date that I will be there because they really want me to commit and help make a super team. The talent going into Texas Tech right now is incredible, as you can see with those guys being committed. If I really like what I see and feel like Lubbock might be home, Texas Tech might be the place for me, but I got to see that when I get up there to visit.”

OUR REACTION

The Red Raiders will likely only take one more offensive lineman in the class, a tackle, and Verhulst appears to be one of the prime, top candidates for the spot right now. He's likely visiting Lubbock in a few weeks, and it'll be interesting to see where things go from there. -Will McKay
