Thomas still hearing from Tech, hopes to visit soon

One of Texas Tech’s first wide receiver offers for the 2017 class was to Lancaster receiver Cartrell Thomas. Since the offer, a lot has changed for the Red Raiders – including the team receiving a commitment from Bronson Boyd – however, even with the changes, Texas Tech is still actively recruiting Thomas.

Thomas picked up his offer from the Red Raiders on March 2 and has been in contact with Tech ever since. Thomas heard from coach Emmett Jones two days ago and speaks with the coach about twice a week currently. He also hears from coach Eric Morris as well. Red Raider commits Jack Anderson and Xavier Martin are also actively recruiting Thomas.

WHAT'S NEXT?:

Thomas has had a pretty eventful summer so far. He made it out to a Rivals Camp Series event, has camped with Illinois, and has participated in various 7-on-7 competitions. The three-star receiver is hoping to cut down his list of 11 offers and eventually form a top-six or top-eight list. Schools in the mix include Illinois, Colorado, Utah, San Diego State, Texas State, Tulsa and Texas Tech. Thomas is hoping to schedule a visit to Tech soon, and has talked to Coach Jones about coming up at the end of July.

Off the field, Thomas said he has been working hard to study and read defenses better and wants to know what the inside linebacker, the safety and the cornerback are all trying to do. He is looking to commit before August and proximity to home, a family environment, trust in the head coach, and a school that wants him both academically and athletically are top priorities.

IN HIS WORDS:

What’s the conversation like with Coach Jones right now?

“Coach Jones and I talk a lot about off-the-field stuff. He asks me how I’m doing and is always checking on me. He makes sure I’m staying on my grades and all of that and wants me to be a team leader.”

“He says he loves me as a receiver and thinks I could play inside or outside. He loves what I bring to the table, and he always tells me he would love me at Texas Tech.”

What do you like about the Red Raiders?

“I always liked Texas Tech, and I have always felt that they have a good program. I love the way they train their receivers, and they develop some good receivers. I feel like the coaches are on the come-up and are bringing Tech back.”

Hearing from other players?

“I hear from the Frisco lineman, Jack Anderson and from the quarterback commit, Xavier Martin. Jett (Duffey) texted me this morning, and he was telling me he would love me at Texas Tech and said, ‘Man, you the best.’ He was just giving me a good word about Tech.”

OUR REACTION

It was originally believed that Texas Tech was done with wide receiver recruiting for 2017 when Boyd committed, however, two wide receivers in the past week – Tre Siggers and Thomas – have said they still hear from Tech and Jones regularly. If Thomas wants to commit to the Red Raiders, his speed, agility, and versatility would make it hard to say no. He could be a serious weapon in the Tech offense.
