LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- David Tairu scored a career-high 22 points to lead five Texas
Tech players in double figures as the Red Raiders beat Georgia Southern 103-79
in the South Padre Invitational on Tuesday night.
Freshman Javarez Willis added 18 points while John Roberson had 17 for Texas
Tech (4-1).
Ben Drayton III led the Eagles (2-3) with 23 points while
finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Tairu hit three 3-pointers, and the Red Raiders never trailed after his first
gave them a 5-3 lead.
Texas Tech had struggled early in games this season but shot 50 percent in the
first half of this one and hit 12 of 15 free throws to take a 49-38 halftime
lead.
The Big Number (49)
After battling slow starts for much of the season, Tech came out and played its
best first half of the year against Georgia Southern. The Red Raiders shot 50
percent from the field and scored 49 points in the opening frame. Tech
led by as many as 14 points in the opening frame, and held the Eagles to just
37.1 percent shooting.
Star of the Game
David Tairu gets the nod here, easily. He played just 25 minutes against GSU,
but scored 22 points, hauled in two rebounds, and logged an assist and a steal.
Unlike previous efforts this season, Tairu did a lot of his damage from behind
the arc, where he hit 3-of-6 attempts.
Unsung Hero
Maybe unsung isn't the best way to describe Javarez Willis' outing against
Georgia Southern, but the freshman had the best game of his young career and
seems to have found his outside shot. Bean shot 6-of-10 from the field, and
4-of-7 from three-point land in just 18 minutes of play; he also registered
three assists and a rebound.
Layups
• Tech's starters today were
Robert Lewandowski, John Roberson and David Tairu; Roberson was the
only Red Raider to log more than 30 minutes (32).
• The Red Raiders finished with advantages points off of turnovers (25 to 15),
fast break points (17 to 4), bench points (40 to 15), and turnovers (14 to 18);
the Eagles held an edge in points in the paint (36 to 32), second chance points
(12 to 7) and rebounds (39 to 37).
• Georgia Southern logged just eight assists against Tech and turned the ball
over 18 times.
• Tech's 103 points were the team's highest total against a Division I
opponent since the Red Raiders beat Texas-Pan Am 103-50 on Dec. 10, 2005.
• D'walyn Roberts missed his fourth-straight game with a back injury.
• Tech shot 53.1 percent from the field against GSU, 56.3 percent in the
second half.
