Texas Tech had one of their best camp turnouts of the summer this past weekend for its satellite camp in Duncanville. A number of prospects showed up to work out in front of the Red Raider coaching staff, including a familiar face in Midland (Texas) defensive end Dillon Springer.

Springer, who has already unofficially visited Texas Tech, speaks with defensive line coach Kevin Patrick on a regular basis. Even following the camp on Sunday, Springer immediately got in contact with coach Joe Robinson and defensive coordinator David Gibbs.

WHAT'S NEXT?:

The 6-foot-1, 235-pound Springer did a little bit of everything this summer, from the weight room to the camp circuit. He camped with schools such as Stephen F. Austin, Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas and Texas Tech where he worked out at defensive end and outside linebacker.

Following various camp showings, including most recently in Duncanville, Springer is excited to put it all on film this upcoming season. Once he does that, he feels like it is only a matter of time before more offers come in. Springer said that he wants to be a leader on the field, show off his edge rush, his movement in space, and his ability to be violent with his hands and violent when he gets to the quarterback.

IN HIS WORDS:

On his camp performance:

“I definitely dominated. That is one of my specialties coming off of the edge. I won every rep. I wanted to compete against the best, so I made sure to go against the best. I competed and got the coaches going ‘wow’.”

“A little bit before the camp, I was talking to coach Patrick about what type of size they are looking for from their defensive linemen. He said they want the 6-foot-3 guys, and I am a 6-foot guy. I went out there and showed them that I can be a good pass rusher off the edge. I may not have that height, but I can work around the edge with my speed.”

On what’s next between him and Texas Tech:

“Actually coach Robinson just hit me up and said that he and coach Patrick were very impressed with my performance. He said I hope I get a chance to play for their team. We will see where that goes and if they offer or not. They want to see it on film this season and show them I am a Div. I player.”

OUR REACTION:

Springer has shown on multiple occasions – whether on film or at the camp – that he is a relentless edge rusher and plays with a very high motor. There is no question that Springer has the mental makeup to be a very good option for the Red Raiders, but his size is what’s holding him up right now. Even at his size, though, if all the improvements he has made this offseason show up on film, look out.
