Sheffield sidelined for spring with injury

Texas Tech senior quarterback Steven Sheffield will miss the rest of the spring after reaggravating a foot injury suffered last season, head coach Tommy Tuberville confirmed on Wednesday. Sheffield had been competing with senior Taylor Potts for the team's starting quarterback position, and appeared to be the front-runner following a strong performance in the Red Raiders' first scrimmage.

"Monday, in practice, he stepped on somebody else's foot," Tuberville said. "Unfortunately, the same bone in the foot he hurt this past fall gave way. They had to re-do it. He had surgery today, I guess a couple of hours, mid-afternoon. It went great."

Sheffield is expected to be out for at least eight weeks, but should be fully recovered by the beginning of the 2010 season.

"He should start working out around the first of June," Tuberville said. "Nothing good ever comes out of bad luck, fortunately he got it in time to where we can re-do it and he can be ready for the fall."

Sheffield first injured his foot in the fourth quarter of Texas Tech's 31-10 victory over Nebraska last October and played sparingly in just two of the team's remaining six games. He played most of the fourth quarter of the 2010 Alamo Bowl, after Potts left the game with an injury, and erased a four-point Michigan State lead en route to a 41-31 victory.

With the Pflugerville product sidelined, Potts, sophomore Seth Doege and redshirt freshman Jacob Karam are expected to receive the bulk of the quarterback reps for the remainder of the spring.
