Red Raiders add three weekend commits

What was arguably the biggest junior day in the history of Texas Tech football also ended up being its most successful. The Red Raiders played host to dozens of prospects over the past two days -- many with offers -- and closed out the weekend with three new commitments.

Pflugerville (Texas) Hendrickson running back Kenny Williams pulled the trigger on Saturday afternoon, just hours after being offered. The Rivals250 watch list prospect said afterward that Texas Tech was and always has been his dream school.

"I grew up on Tech," Williams said. "Even though I grew up in Austin, Tech's always been my No. 1 team."

Shortly after Williams' committed, Brenham (Texas) wide receiver Derek Edwards did the same. He cited Texas Tech's family atmosphere as a big reason why.

"I knew all of the schools were getting new facilities, I knew all the schools were getting new stuff," he said. "I knew that, basically, all the schools were doing the same things as far as changing up things that they were doing.

"What pushed me over the edge was the atmosphere. When I was up there, people knew my name already. I know it's going to be like that everywhere else that I go, but I just felt right up there. The offense that they run fits perfectly. I watched them scrimmage. I watched Lyle Leong and how I would be playing and I think I'll fit in perfectly with what they're trying to do."

The Red Raiders' third pledge of the weekend came a day later, when Arlington (Texas) Sam Houston offensive center Tony Morales called offensive coordinator Neal Brown and offensive line coach Matt Moore and committed.

"I called Coach Moore at first, because I was going to commit to him, but he didn't answer. I called Coach Brown and I told him, and he was real excited. He told me to call Coach Moore later on because he was in a meeting.

"He (Moore) was real excited. He told me that he was committed to me and that I was committed to him. He said that he wasn't going to look at any other centers."

AMARO VISITS RAIDERS, AGGIES BACK-TO-BACK

San Antonio (Texas) MacArthur tight end Jace Amaro was one of the more physically imposing prospects in attendance on Saturday. The 6-foot-5, 237-pound prospect arrived a day early, on Friday, and was able to watch two of the Red Raiders' practices.

"It was good," he said. "There were a lot of passes, the same offense as in the past. I'm real excited. They are great coaches, they are real young. It's a good deal now."

Amaro followed up his visit to the South Plains with a junior day trip to Texas A&M on Sunday. He closed the weekend without giving either program his commitment, but one could be coming soon.

"I mean, it's a long process," he said. "I've got to take some time, pray about it, but when I make my decision, it will be right."

Aside from Texas Tech and Texas A&M, Amaro also holds offers from Arizona, Baylor, Duke, Missouri and Rice.

WASHINGTON HAS A TOP THREE

Having grown up just an hour outside of Lubbock, Muleshoe (Texas) defensive end Cooper Washington is no stranger to Red Raider football. On Saturday, though, he met Tommy Tuberville's new staff for the first time.

"I like what I see," he said. "They're all nice people. They all came up to me and talked to me. I like the new stuff they're building, the environment, it's pretty neat."

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect noted that he is "wide open," but at this point is leaning towards three schools.

"I am leaning towards, I can say, Tech, OSU and OU," he said.

With a visit to Texas Tech already in the books, Washington is now looking forward to checking out Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the coming months.

"We're going to stay a couple of nights at OSU, just visit there," he said. "Then I'm going to go to an OU camp this summer."
