Throughout the spring evaluation period, it became very clear that Texas Tech was interested in one position group above all defensively: defensive backs.

The Red Raiders are looking to take a big class at both corner and safety, so as a result, DC David Gibbs and new cornerbacks coach Karl Scott have sent out a large number of offers to secondary prospects since late April.

One of the first DBs to pick up an offer from Tech during the open period was Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus corner Matt Hankins. The Red Raiders were the first in-state and second Big 12 team to offer the DFW native, and he's seen his recruitment really pick up since then, now holding 22 total offers.

As for Tech, here's what Hankins had to say when they extended the offer:

“It’s very exciting. It is my first in-state offer and is only my second Big 12 offer. They are in the Big 12 and face a lot of good competition in that league. I would love to compete against some of those teams. Their defensive scheme is like the NFL which is a plus and Coach Gibbs used to coach in the NFL, so he has a lot of experience.”

Now, the Red Raiders will get a chance to show off their program to the Marcus prospect, as he's set to visit Lubbock this weekend. (Click here to see the full visitors list!)

EVALUATION

The defensive back mold that David Gibbs and his assistants are going for is as follows: Long, fluid, physical, and instinctual. If you're roughly six feet or taller, have good hips, and good instincts, then you're one step closer to picking up an offer at DB from Tech.

Hankins is all those things, and you love what you see from him as far as raw instincts and fluidity. He keeps his eyes on the QB in zone coverage, and he moves well with receivers in man coverage.

Hankins is just what Tech is looking for.

WHERE DOES TECH STAND?

I think being the first in-state offer for Hankins and only his second Big 12 offer helped the Red Raiders get ahead of the curve, and the fact that he's visiting Lubbock this weekend will give Tech a chance to really impress him.

So, while I think they may be with the top of the pack right now, I think a good visit this weekend could really push them to the forefront with Hankins.
