Texas Tech quarterback Pat Mahomes was named to the Maxwell Award watch list on Tuesday, identifying him as a contender for the award presented annually to the nation's top college football player.

Mahomes led the nation in total offensive yards per game as a sophomore in 2015, becoming just the third player in Big 12 history to account for more than 5,000 yards of total offense in a single season.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on Oct. 31, and the three finalists will be revealed on Nov. 21. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8 as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.

Mahomes is one of 12 Big 12 players on the Maxwell Award watch list: Baylor wide receiver KD Cannon, TCU wide receiver Deante' Gray, West Virginia quarterback Skyler Howard, Baylor running back Shock Linwood, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine, Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph, Baylor quarterback Seth Russell, TCU wide receiver KaVontae Turpin, Iowa State running back Mike Warren and Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington. Davis Webb, who transferred from Texas Tech to Cal over the offseason, is also listed.
