Martin impressed by Texas Tech offense, looks ahead to 2016

There's still a good chunk of time between now and the time 2017 quarterback commit Xavier Martin dons the scarlet and black, but the 5.5 three-star already closely follows his future team.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Martin sprained his ankle in a regional round playoff win against Del Rio and it was still bothering them for the remainder of Cibolo Steele's playoff run -- which ended in the semifinal round to the eventual state and national champion Katy Tigers. The 6-foot, 175-pound dual-threat quarterback watched closely during Texas Tech's Texas Bowl matchup with LSU. Despite the Red Raiders' loss, Martin still saw several positives to take away from the game.

IN HIS WORDS

"I loved how much they pass and really their offense looked great. Jakeem Grant went off, it was incredible. He and Patrick Mahomes just went off. I think by next year their defense is going to be better and I think with their offense and defense working together I think they will be a lot better."

"The defensive end coming in, Houston Miller, he will help them a lot and Kolin Hill is already up there -- he transferred from Notre Dame -- he's one of my good friends and I think he will help them a lot. Then they have some good defensive backs and defensive linemen coming in in this current class that will help out a lot."

OUR REACTION

Martin was excellent for Steele and was a big reason for the team's dominant run during the season. He's still more than a year away from signing a National Letter of Intent, but his level of involvement with and commitment to the Red Raiders has to be taken as a very positive sign. -- Aaron Dickens
