JUCO DT is what Tech needs

Highland (Kan.) Highland C.C. defensive tackle Marcus Smith committed to Texas Tech on Sunday, giving Kliff Kingsbury's program some much-needed help at the position.

With three players graduating from the Red Raiders' already thin defensive line, Smith knew that there would be plenty of early playing time available in Lubbock.

"The visit was great," Smith said. "I liked everything about the visit, from top to bottom. I built a bond with the coaches and I met a couple of the players. I just really had a bond from day one with everyone, from Friday to Sunday. I felt at home. I feel like there's a good opportunity to come in, play early and win championships."

Smith's commitment wraps up a whirlwind recruitment that began in earnest with an offer on Wednesday. He set up a visit that day and headed to the South Plains on Friday.

"Top to bottom, when I first came in, I felt at home," he said. "The hospitality was great. Everything was first class here. Every aspect of my visit was great.

"The coaches, they're a great group. They're cool. You can talk to them and feel comfortable when you talk to them. You can be yourself. The d-coordinator (Matt Wallerstedt), I like him a lot. I believe in his system. The bond is there."

The 6-foot-3, 305-pound prospect chose Texas Tech over offers from Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, North Texas, Temple, Texas State and others. He expects to help the Red Raiders in many ways.

"I play all the positions on the d-line but they want to primarily use me at the nose tackle position," he said. "I'll be moving around a lot in the sub packages, but in the base package I'll be at noseguard."

Smith said he will not take additional visits and plans on signing with the Red Raiders on Wednesday.
