DMV shows well in UA BIA event

September 6, 2013 - The Under Armour "Brothers in Arms" classic got underway Sunday with Friendship Collegiate defeating St. Francis of Baltimore 32-6. St. Francis the two time MIAC C champion suffered their first loss of the season while the Knights raised their record to 2-0.
Friendship jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a screen pass from quarterback DeAndre Parker to Jonathan Haden.
With the score 7-6 at the half the Knights scored with 9:05 remaining in the third quarter on a 46 yard pass from Parker to Robert Johnson as the Knights took a 14-6 lead. Linebacker Malik Harris scored on a 23 yard interception with 5:34 remaining in the third as Friendship took a 26-6 lead.
"The play call came from the defensive coordinator", said Harris. "It was a blitz I saw the curl coming out and I was able to pick it off and run it back".
Kelvin Barrett raced 21 yards for the final touchdown for the D.C. charter school.
Robert Johnson, a bright spot for Friendship's offense, caught 4 passes for 131 yards.
Linebacker coach Curtis Allen talked about their defense which has not allowed a touchdown this year.
"I think we played good in the first half. The difference is in the first half we made some mental errors which we corrected in the second half. We came out and tackled well and that was the difference.
"We have a young spirited group that runs to the ball well that sometimes makes mistakes but they all play hard" said Allen. "They are playing well for us for us. We have still have work to do".
"Jalen (Tabor) is the heart and soul of our defense. We have a talented secondary."
Friendship as reported earlier was the only public school from the DMV that participated in the classic.
In the second game Gonzaga used a last second field goal to defeat Cocoa (Florida) 17-14.
Monday DeMatha defeated Godby (Tallahassee) the defending 6A Florida champion, 26-9.
The Stags rushed for 244 yards and led from start to finish against the visitors from Florida.
Taiwan Deal ran for 101 yards while his counterpart, Lorenzo Harrison rushed for 91 yards.
"I'm just proud of our guys and their effort" said head coach Elijah Brooks. "Our guys were motivated to play well and they showed the country we have some pretty good football here. It's great for us to go out and represent the area well. We beat a good Godby team today.
"We want to put our program on a national scale", said Brooks. "In order to be the best to have to beat the best. We want to challenge our team, we have a tough road ahead".
The game was televised nationally on ESPN.
In other District-Maryand-Virginia games played this weekend.
St. Johns blanked Bullis 42-0. Carroll shutout Palloti 33-0. Ballou blanked T.Roosevelt 40-0. Wilson beat Perry Street Prep 55-12. Dunbar defeated McKinley 28-2. Anacostia blanked Cesar Chavez 32-0.
In Virginia TC Williams defeated Oakton 38-2,while Battlefield took out Woodbridge 31-6.
